Beatport - what's their cut ?

i dont know and i may be quoting out of my ass, but ive heard it works out to roughtly a bit less than half goes to the label.

I belioeve its 60 /40 in beatports favour with the label - then you get 50/50 with the label... sell a couple hundred tracks expect to make 20 or 30 dollars if your an artist.

It should be added that I don't think beatport is accepting a lot of new music right now that isn't on a label they are already working with and if you just got a great tune with no label you probably won't be able to get on the site. They're pretty much cleaning up shop.

most sites charge 50/50 but your dead right, unless you got a big tune on your hands, you'll be lucky to make enough money to buy an ipod to play them on

you could try signing your label upto a site like http://cdbaby.com/ who have a deal with beatport, this could be your only way in as beatport won't take on labels without a big track record

I'm surprised that BeatPort and other digital download sites are getting such a high percentage of the sales. I can't remember where I got it from, but I was under the impression that iTunes paid out 70% or so and that that was the norm.

In the UK, with physical music sales its standard for the retailer to get a 50% markup - so the retailer would pay £2 for it and sell it at £3 which means the retailer keeps 33% and the distributor 67%.

If anything, the distributor should get a higher margin for digital sales as there is no risk for the retailer. If they are only paying out 40% the distributors are getting screwed big time.

Good, it's the distributers that screwed everyone over in the vinyl days.

Anyway, the money is not why we do this eh? That's one reason that I stopped being concerned with getting my tracks "signed" after a few releases. You give away your rights to something you worked very hard to create, and you get back almost nothing. Or you end up spending more on CDRs and postage trying to get signed than you'll ever make back

yeah beatport cut is sixty percent.

a lot of these online stores just take an insane cut. greed greed greed. everybody is so greedy.

I don't think you can even find BT on beatport. He is just selling his music on his website last time I checked.

making money from playing live. and also from the movies he does.

The days of making money from record sales are over. Wait... They never existed unless you're a pop artist on one of the big four. The only way to make money is by playing live shows.

70/30, or 60/40 in the label/artists favor is typical for real distribution... shouldn't it be the same or even MORE for downloads where they have no physical stock to worry about?

Whilst I don't make my own tunes, I have setup plenty of online stores before and I've toyed with the idea of setting up a download store primarily for artists so they can sell their stuff direct and not get screwed over.

Plus I really hate BeatPort.
