rack mount midi controllers?

Post by Mike Goodwin » Mon Jan 14, 2008 8:16 pm

Anyone know of a 1 u rack mountable set of midi encoders? Is this something I am going to have to build? Seems so obvious but I don't know of one.

Thanks for any leeds.

1 rack space sounds too minimal for a company to even bother producing. However, the killamix controllers look like they could fit in a single rack space. Maybe get one of those and then customer make some kind of bracket.

there is one made by a german company... i can't remember the name of it though!! i'm pretty sure it has 10 knobs with an LED for each knob and is designed as a rackmount unit... i'm certain i read about it here in the forums too - if i figure it out i'll post it here for you.

This one is a 3 space USB 2.0 midi controller that was designed to look like a dual CD player.

just out of curiosity, how much would you be willing to pay for, say, a row of 8 encoders and some bank switches in a 1-unit rack?

:)

still can't remember the other one i mentioned... DOH!!

is there anything stopping you getting out a drill and putting rackmounts on whatever you want (apart from maybe the size of these things...)?

I need it to fit into a 1U space in a rack for my live rig. I was using larger midi controllers but I have decided to hardwire a analog mixer into my case to replace the encoders. I am using a 6 space desktop road case with a touch screen built right into the lid and a 5 space analog mixer I want to use the last space for the remaining 12 midi pots that I need. That would make my day. It can't be more than one space. The kenton one is nice but not enough knobs and way fancier than I need.

i reckon you might have to build somethin to fit that bill... 12 encoders, rack mountable and 1U space 8O

i'd recommend using an arduino to build from at the moment (as it's cheap and i know how to use one... other midi stuff dunno about), but you'd need to convert the input to midi using processing or something...

Buy a Doepfer Pocket Electronics and make one yourself. Shouldn't be hard at all.

Better yet, use the Dial Electronics and have rotary encoders.

I managed to build one out of a Evolution XS midi controller :) Twelve pots and ten buttons in a 1U rack and it is working great! The case was from another piece of gear that I just butchered. Now that I see how it all works I will most likely buy a new case and pimp it out bit with some lights and so on.

Here is my Live Control project. Touch screen in the lid running Reaktor :)

Xsession by evolution is pretty easy to hack. Good for home made projects.

EDIT: I dont know why my picture links are not working hmmmmmm. copy and paste if you want to see it I guess.

Peace

I think they don't show up because they are just url's, not .jpg files (I guess would still qualify as a url, but I mean the actual file, not the web page which it is displayed on..)
