Add control for external midi devices!

Post by orgul » Mon Jan 14, 2008 11:48 am

I saw steinberg updated their external midi device option in c4. You can now build you own custom templates to control external hardware with midi cc and SYSEX!

You all probably know that both logic and cubase had similar otions since the atari days.

LIVE NEEDS A SIMILAR OPTION!

If you, like me, feel this urgent need to integrate your vintage gear in your LIVE Setup with more then midi program changes please join this thread!

edit: okay I know this has been requested before. but I just can't help it:

Please add sysex support!

With the current trend of integrating hardware with software through VST-plugins, I don't think Ableton is going to spend a lot of time on this. BUT I would like this very much as well. I would even be settled if this functionality would be implemented in macros, where a macro could control one parameter in a plugin and another one in a hardware effects unit or synth.
Computer: MBP M1Pro 32GB 1TB, MixPre 6 MKII
Hardware: Syntrx II, Matriarch, Hydrasynth, Minifreak, Nord Drum 2, Modular (mainly Make Noise)
Controllers: Push 3, Launchpad Mk3, Launch Control, Sensel Morph, PC4, Nanokontrol

It would be so natural to have, as part of an External Instrument, a customisable set of controllers (allowing SYSEX as well as CC.) A graphical UI for your Ext. Instr. would be even nicer off course.
Yes, much like Cubase for Atari had its mixermaps more than 15 years ago

I agree this would be a great improvement for the external device, if you could name all the CCs and route them and save it as a preset for your hardware.

I've been going mad today searching for a URL I'm sure I found a few weeks ago, I think I saw it in a tweet. I was a cross platform generic VST solution to this, it had an SDK that allowed you to make your own VSTs too. Anyone know what it is?

Yeah would be good. Other than sysex support though I can see this getting the 'that's what m4l is for' treatment. Which is sort of fair enough I guess, except that it's quite an expensive way if you don't have m4l.

yes plz!

the lack of sysex control is a bummer if u're working with an old synth. automation for midi program changes would be nice too. it seems u can only have one prog change sent per midi track.

I would kill for this feature. I am trying to do a really basic version using the "external instrument" and putting it in a control rack so that I can label the 8 most important CC values that I want to remember. That way I can open the clip, select the CC, and tweak.

Only problem is that this external instrument is generating midi feedback loops in my system. Not fun.

I wish they had this worked out a little better. Everything else about Live is amazing.
