Compressor Not Limiting as Expected

Try setting the compressor (on any mode) at Infinite ratio with a threshold of anything less than 0db or even 0db for that matter... when the input track volume is pushed to extremes, it clips post the compressor/limiter...

ANyone else noticed this?

It's not a brickwall limiter that's why.

Yes limiting is "technically" compression with an infinite ratio, but there's more to it than that. This is one reason we've been asking Ableton for a dedicated limiter for so long.

Hmm... the earlier versions of compressor did not have a infinite ratio, it only showed up in 7 so i expected it to function as a brick wall limiter as well... atleast thats what an infinite ratio is supposed to do....

Whats the Abe's have to say about this?

I find that if I turn Makeup off I do have (at least very close to) brickwall limiting, although there may be some calibration problems in there.

Tested:

1 Operator, +6 db output, pure sine, played in bursts (looped midi clip)

4 Utility plugins, each with +35 db gain.

1 compressor, model=FF2, ratio=inf, thresh -1 db, Output 0 db, makeup OFF.

No clipping, even though there is +146 db of gain going in there. Turn makeup on and it WILL clip.
