OP essentially asked for knob/slider-per-function

That's the only reason I don't recommend a desktop evolver
I wouldn't mind the matrix interface so much if I could see it in the dark

Mines a desktop, to be honest the matrix scared me when I opened the box and looked at it, I'm the sort who gets a software synth and still cant be bothered to learn the UI so I did have a day or two where I wondered whether I'd ever really get on with the evolver.

Thats actually why I bought the Nord soon after, because I wanted that 1knob=1function type of synth and the evolver didn't give me that. By the time I'd had the nord for a week or so, I'd completely gotten the hang of the matrix for the parameters I use.

It does look a bit intimidating, but stick with it and it soon becomes second nature even to someone like me who couldn't be bothered to figure out how massive and any number of other VSTi's worked.

If you decide to go vintage analog, remember to include something like the Kenton ProSolo midi-to-cv converter in your budget.
I can warmly recommend Roland SH 2 and SH 09. Both are very easy to make a cv-to-filter input on. They both have envelope follower on ext. input.

Man, forget the Casio VZ10m . It CAN get amazing sounds but talk about an inpenetratable interface. User hostile.

My secret weapon is my Analogue Solutions Red Square. Nice, fast envelopes and nasty ways to modulate the filter.
