I love jazz too. But my exposure is limited- its not like you can just tune this stuff in on the local radio.

So, I know about some of these artists, but others I have heard the name but not the music. So your lists are like a great starting point for a jazz listening spree.

I'm gonna hop up on MuiscMatch radio and make a new radio station with some great JAZZ.

I can hear Weather Report now...

yeh, panthalassa is not what i'd call jazz, but there were some good remixes, i'm thinking of Rated-X, i don't remember who did it.

speakin bout that, i'd add "on the corner" by miles to my list. and all his stuff from the seventies (the live stuff... brilliant... dark magus, pangaea...).
ah, and sun ra's stuff as well...

and steve coleman and monk and pfff... the list is too long...
and bugge wesseltoft as well. he's done some really good things IMO.

teo macero is one of the great "electronica" producers
up there with king tubby and eno in my book for godfather status

listen to the records he produced for miles closely
edits, looping, ill-ass effects...
on big fun there are tracks where it sounds like 2 drumers playing together
its teo's switcher box- some kind of custom panner he had made

his ear for how electonic and acoustic textures work together is unmatched
in my book

brad mehldua - art of the trio volume 3, songs.

this is my fave jazz record, although I'm no expert. I really like the piano phrasing and I'm totally in love with the drums. Also, not sure if this counts as jass, but Serge Gainsborg, histoire melody nelson.

hey, i'm with you on this one. finaly, my kind of jazz. i was a bit surprise to see that many of you are into fusion. we can start a separate topic on this, but i really think that fusion sucks and people who are listening to it don't dig jazz. no offence.

i'm doing jazz music on Live. we played at this year's Transmediale festival. two laptops and the double bass. i think that Live is really awesome for (not only Improve) Jazz.

well, that depends on what you call fusion. if weather report, pastorius or 'in a silent way' are fusion, then i don't agree with you (and i try not to get offended)...

i mean, it's got all the ingredients of jazz: improvisation, groove, and most of all, soul. what do you want more? a double bass and a swinging ride? that's a bit as if all that is called electronic music had to be detroit techno....
though, i agree that it's not in 'fusion' that the best pieces of jazz can be found.
but i think you are a bit extreme.

anyway, how do use Live in a jazz context?
recording loop on the fly, or actually playing your computer?
with pre-recorded loops? VSTis?
i'm pretty curious.

can't really choose between those. but in general: jazz is great. I love people who can really play from the heart instead of 'brain music'!

we use prerecorded loops (drums, piano loops...) and samples that are triggered (sax solos, cimbals...). we are messing them up with all sorts of VSTs (granular stuff, suppatrigga...). double bass player is doing the rest

we have laptops and Ozone/Oxygen keyboards.

Well these days i ain't got time for twelve solos when i put on a record, so that excludes alot of bebop and free jazz which is otherwise amazing.

And bitches brew and jazz-funk (or sophista-funk as i once heard) well that's the bomb but i don't think it's quite aged so well...

So, for me jazz just gotta be short and sweet

Ahmad Jamal at the pershing...
Jimmy Scott...
Sun ra - rocket number 9...

Herbie of course listed the Apple II as part of his gear on his albums in the early 80's - but i've no idea how he was using it - anybody know?

well, that's interesting...
i really wonder if i would consider it as jazz, you know, if i just saw you at a festival without knowing you...
the thing is that i don't have an idea how it sounds...

anyway, i'm surprised you don't dig jazz from the 70s (fusion), because there could be some things in common with your music.
