ASIO vs. MME?

What is the difference between using MME/directX vs. using ASIO? I can select all of my ins and outs for my soundcard under ASIO, and not MME. Is there a technical difference? I am using a hammerfall DSP Multiface II, running winxp. Any info would be appreciated.
