Nord modular G2, opinions?

hi. i was looking to get a nord rack 2 since some time and found out that the nord modular G2 is about to get an update to intel mac and wondered, how is the G2 in comparing to the lead/rack2 (which i really like). is it complicated to work with? how is the sound like? integration with live?

most people will tell you that because of the updated converters in the g2 that you can hear the difference between the lead and lead 2. don't know how much of that actually matters but I've heard it said in most conversations in which the 2 were compaired.

so.. anyone cares to tell a bit more about it? does it have the "nord sound"? or is it totally different beast than the lead2 ? does it have more complex sound? is the G1 something worth looking at (cheaper..)?

great synth if you like modular stuff, and it's simpler than reaktor.
Btw they still haven't upgrade the editor to universal binary and
i've read it has a few problems on intel macs.

Well, in my oppinion, the NordLead1 has a sound all of it's own. It's grittier and harsher than the rest (which can be a good thing, or a bad thing). I suspect that the NL1 sound could become a classic in its own right. NordLead2 and NordModular G1 kind of share sound. In my opinion a little thin, bright, well defined and with a lot of bite (as "standard", of course clever patching on the G1 can change that quite a bit). The Modular G2 and NordLead3 also sound quite alike. Warmer, and easier to get phat than the NL2 and NM1 but on the other hand not quite as much "bite" as the NL2/NM1.

However, both the NM1 and G2 are sooo flexible, that patching can change the sound a lot. It is entirely possible to make really fat and warm sounds on the NM1, and Really harsh, biting sounds on the G2, it just takes a little more work...

I have a G1 and had a G2 to replace the G1..
I sold the G2 because it doesn't have that sound.

As Johnisfaster said; the DAC on the G2 are as smooth as silk..
The G1 really has that raw edge to the sound which I prefer..

The NL1 and NM G1 share the same DAC's: 18 bit
The NL2 and NM G2 both 24 bit..

Interface wise the G2 cannot be compared to G1; G2 is waaaay better..
But i.m.o. the G1 is definitly something to look out for..
I think it is capable of doing more complex sounds than the NL because you can route your own stuff..

I even think the NM has the exact same sound as the NL because I assume they use the same DSP..
Only the NM takes the sonic spectrum a bit further..

Don't forget that the G2 has a better effects engine, and also does physical modelling on top of the fm and modular synthesis and still acts as a pretty compelling fx processing tool in it's own right also.

Sure it won't sound like a NL2 (more like a NL3 to these ears) but the hybrid synthesis territory you can cover with it's PM synthesis would make it a sheer winner over the NL2 for me any day of the week for what it's worth.

Not much else comes close in hardware on a raw synthesis power front for combined subtractive, fm, physical modelling, modular synthesis and modular effects processing device at that price point (especially for the cost of the rack).

Will surely be a device that would grow with your needs as your programming skills developed further also.
