Sample Management very circumstantial

Post by violetpow1 » Sun Jan 27, 2008 6:44 pm

Take an example :

You would like to slice a drumloop for later work or later new tracks. Open a new liveset put the drumloop inside, slice it and drop the clip in the Live browser.
Work done.
You have no ambitions to make more. If you close Live, you sliced samples are in the temp project folder and will deleted without saving the project.
If you know that you have to save you slices before you closing Live.

This is crap. Can you solve this with option of slice sample saving?

Next thing.
Import a Drumloop and edit it with eq and filter and resample it.
The resampled File you would like to add in you favourite drumloop library.
But you can simply drag the resampled loop in the Live browser, no you open the Windows explorer find him and move him to the right place.

Very circumstantial, dont you ?

try dragging to a different project folder than the one you started in. you should get a dialog asking if you want to move the samples also.

this is controlled by a preference setting (ask, yes, no)

thanks longjohns.
Yes this works of course, but if you produce a new sample in Live (or lets say, you make sounddesign) you cant add this sample or clip to you library per drag and drop.
First you have to find the sample, then copy to the library and search after the samples in Live, if you open the instrument and now you are save.

Not really easy.

After a lot of tests i found out, if you record something and move the clip to you library, Live copied the recorded Sample only, if you save the project BEFORE you drag the clip to your library.

This is circumstantial, because you have to save to some project, but you dont wont it.
Making your own samples with Live to fill your library is not possible so easy, how they Ableton people say.

Please Ableton Devs out there, can you repair this!!!

I hope that you are not using the Library as a place to create and save Live sets..

I use the Library for save my clips and my own samples, because Live copy my samples in the Library folder in a very common folder. This will give a chaos.
But this was before i found the copy option.

The Live sets not.

Circumstantial can misslead. I´m a german i don´t know a better word.

Ok : THE SAMPLE MANAGEMENT IS VERY DIFFICULT Mr. Ableton

my suggestion is to create one special project folder,

you could call it 'sound design' or 'working project' or something.

then if you are in the position of needing to save a set just for sample copying purposes, you can save it in that project.

periodically you can manage that project and delete anything which is unused.

the things you deliberately copied to the library will not be effected if you allowed Live to copy the sample files

as you have said, it does lead to chaos in certain folders such as /Library/Samples/Imported, etc..
