Well, I got a call back from my local Apple store.
Good news I guess:
The guy looked into my problem for many hours, so he said, and is extremely frustrated, too. They are getting some older generation macbooks w/ 2.16 Core 2 Duos next week. He said he will swap mine for that one, add a gig of extra memory, and transfer my files for free. On top of that, he's going to refund me $400 for my trouble.
So. Question: Should I swap (the guy said this older one has the TI chipset), or should I keep?

I know is a macbook and not the pro version but the chipset should be the same.
Ask him if you can try - thing is there are a lot of complaints about the new santa rosa chipset so i think it would be a smart move + extra ram & $400 refund, not to be laughed at is it.

macbooks are pretty cheep these days, and you do get a student discount from the online apple storeGrahambo! wrote:Well, what I want is a Mac. I've never used one, but that's all I see are Macs on stage. They look so neat. But they cost more for worse specs compared to a Dell machine... so it's a toss-up: get a cool-looking Mac, or a better-performance (hopefully) Mac?
EDIT: What if instead of buying a a 2.2 GHz Dell, I got a 2.0 GHz Mac? Big performance difference? Or what if I got 2gb or 1gb of ram instead of 3?
Grahambo! wrote:yeah i agree. the 2.2 to a 2.16 downgrade shouldnt mean much, i don't think. i just want a working firewire port haha. and $400 is always nice. then i can by my novation remote sl bag haha.
Mine is a 2.33Ghz and i have all the power i need at the moment, i doubt there will be much difference downgrading to a 2.16
Another way of looking at it is you will probably have a working system.
I say give it a try and see. GAMBOL, lol take a chance innit.
Option 2 definitely. Bring your interface with and test it at the store when you go to pick it up as well. Apple employees are usually really good about helping you out when they can see the issue first hand.

Mak esure nobody spills beer on it - i hate it when that happens.Grahambo! wrote:Great. Thanks everyone. Glad this will turn around for me. too bad I'm not swapping before this weekend though. I have a show this saturday w/ my band... oh well. Ableton seems stable enough actually w/ this current macbook. It should get me by for that night.
Let me get this straight... not only are they going to swap that Macbook out for one that's compatible with your Firestudio, they are going to double the amount of installed memory, transfer all of your files over for you, and instead of charging you a 15% restocking fee, are going to give you $400 back.Good news I guess:

Dude, that's outstanding news, imho.
