Fedex isn't any worse than any other carrier and it's often the individual driver who is to blame, also some companies who don't know how to properly pack their shit.
Also the value and size of the box doesn't automatically mean a signature is required. You should specify that directly. Weather isn't a factor as long as it's left in a dry place...which includes your covered porch that everybody can see from the street. If drivers waited for everybody to be home for a signature then nobody would get their shit.
Don't trust FedEx with your synths!
No covered porch here!
And when I phoned to complain they did state that it was company policy to always get a signature upon delivery. But I guess you're right that it is down to the individual driver. That said, any company should really ensure that their employees are following protocol and customer service standards.

My friend had his Alesis Ion sent away for repairs. When it came back, FedEx left the box right on his front porch, basically 30 feet from the sidewalk, at ground level, "ALESIS ION 49 KEY SYNTHESIZER" printed in big black letters on the side of the box, in plain view of downtown. My friend was at work for another 6 hours.
Luckily I walked by his place shortly after it arrived, and brought it back to mine so someone didn't jack it. You think they would've held onto it and put a notice on the door. After spending $400 on the synth and about $200 in repairs, I think he would've been pretty pissed if someone like me just walked up and grabbed it.
I've only lost one package because FedEx didn't bother to ring my buzzer when they dropped it on my doorstep. I even called and made a claim, but they didn't do shit about it. Luckily it was only worth about $15, but it was a pretty hard to find bike cassette. Kind of a bitch. I've even tried signature confirmation and it's a fucking joke. The last 5-6 packages I've ordered have all been signature confirmation, and I've only signed one of them.
The moral of the story is: FedEx is a joke. Make sure to get lots of insurance and signature confirmation. At least you'll have somewhat of a leg to stand on when things get fucked.
