OT: A Hypothetical Mac Backup/Time Machine/Capsule Question

Post by dhilsabeck » Wed Jan 30, 2008 10:29 pm

Hey All, thanks in advance for your insight.

Can I achieve the same results as Time Capsule (Wireless Automatic Backup) by hooking up multiple external hd's to a usb hub that's plugged into the back of of my Airport Extreme?

Any faster suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Drew

I dont think its possible. To my understanding that USB port is just for printer sharing. I had the same idea some time ago but I read somewhere it was merely just for print sharing. Although it would be a good idea for it to work that way.

Let me know if you are able to make it, id be interested in making it myself.

Bummer.

What about the Ethernet ports? Could you get a cheap external HD like this: http://www.superwarehouse.com/LaCie_min ... /p/1494477 and then daisy chain with fw400???

Cheers

You should have a look around for wireless external hard drives. I bought a 320gb external drive a few months ago for under 100 dollars and it has an ethernet connection so that you can hook it up to you wireless router and access the drive wirelessly. To my understanding, that's pretty much what time capsule is, but bigger.

While it's SUPPOSED to be possible, using TimeCapsule with HD's connected to airport extreme still is not working right according to macrumors.com.

You CAN hook up a HD to the USB port on your new (802.11n) Airport Extreme and use it just fine. The rub is that you can't use it with Time Machine. But with something like Chronosync you're golden.
