Possible to use one plugin for multiple pads in drum rack?

Post by posssu » Thu Jan 31, 2008 1:28 am

I'd like to know how it would be possible to use one plugin for multiple pads to save CPU power.

For example: I load a drum plugin and I want snare to one pad, bass drum to one pad, etc etc, but I don't want to load a new instance for every pad and I want still be able to add effects to every sound separately.

Any way to split a drum kit inside a rack CPU efficiently? Or some other multi-sound-plugin.

group the chains you want to share fX

they now are a sub rack within the main drum rack.

now group the sub rack (just itself)

now you've got an instrument rack as the sub-rack, and the grouped drum chains as a sub-sub-drum rack..

;)

FX for the whole group go on the end of the sub-rack (instrument rack)

FX for original individual chains (top level pads) go on the chains of the sub-sub-drum rack

hope that makes some sense

Hi!

Thanks for the answer. I'm sorry I don't get it... first of all, how can I group the chains I want to share fx when there's only one chain (one drum plugin equals one chain, right?)

I have one plugin for the whole drum kit: how can make it so that I have multiple drum pads that all go to one single plugin?

Thanks and sorry for not getting it (yet).

Thanks for a pointless post, pj_player.

Longjohns, maybe I explained it a bit badly. My problem is actually what happens before your answer: how can I use multiple pads with a single plugin. Here's a screenshot:

Now, I have Addictive Drums -plugin on one pad and the whole drumkit is loaded into this plugin.

Let's say I want to make C#1 my hihat. This would mean I have to drag some plugin to assign the sound for it, but in this case, the sound is already in the plugin on the previous pad. How can I assign the pads so that they all still play through the same Addictive Drums-plugin without duplicating the actual plugin? What do I have to add to these pads?

As far as I know, the pad view is only usable with ableton devices, I think only drum racks and instrument racks will be able to map out to the pads.

So I imagine that in your case the drum plugin will respond to all the MIDI notes, but ableton can't "read" the note assignments in order to represent them on the pads.

Remember that the pads are not a starting point, they are a map of the ending point. In other words, MIDI comes into the rack, and through all the devices and sub-racks contained in it, etc... and the notes that end up triggering samples in the rack get represented as pads

But in your case it's not able to make that representation because you are using this 3rd party plugin

I would be curious if you used multiple instances of the addictive drum plug, with one sound on each, whether the pads would come into play. and if there would be a cpu hit vs. all sounds on a single plug.

maybe at that point you could pick up with my previous suggestions

If Addictive Drums is a multi timbral/multi out instrument, then try this:

Full size pic here

Edit: Just checked the Addictive Drums web page, it is a multi out instrument so you should be able to do this.

I had actually tried this, but didn't realize I can also input the audio with the External Instrument, so I had ended up with all the pads routing midi, but all the audio outputting from the same plugin.

Here's how I did it at the end, I also managed to create inputs for the room- and overhead-channels:

Image

The chains PLUGIN and OVERHEAD and ROOM are all chains with "External Instrument" as well, but they output to a midi channel that has no sound (below bass drum) and input the sound from the room- and overhead-mics.

Also, I created a dummy-chain for the plugin itself as well. The midi doesn't affect the plugin on that channel, it's just there, because I can't hide it, but there's no sound coming out from that channel.

Thanks, working perfectly!
