I agree that it is not easy. I used to think like you, but I had only listened to a few very glitchy tracks. Now that I got their previous albums I get them better and they are 1st class sound designers + artist. Their music works on an emotional level + as showpiece for sonic research.

You probably do not have a listening history in experimental music if you ask what is the point of this. But I am going to tell you that when you will understand what they are making you are going to become a better artist yourself whatever kind of music you do.

I have my tickets to see them live in april, and I am quite thrilled by what I heard of this new album.

Totally agreed. I've been an Autechre fan for quite some years. I've listened to Quaristice 3 times now, and I cannot say I LIKE all the songs (yet). But I definitely feel CHALLENGED by the album, that's for sure. That's what I really appreciate in their music. It grabs my attention, I have to work hard to get it, and once I DO get it, it turns out to be extremely rewarding.

If I was allowed to listen to one band only for the rest of my life, it would be Autechre for sure. They never bore me (and yes, I think that Burial is highly overrated too

)

That's a funny sentence to a 44 year old bloke who's into electronic music for all of his life, but you cannot know that, my friend...

. But tastes are different and there's other music that i prefer. Anyway, thanks for your advice...

oddly enough, it is Incunabula and Amber that I feel are a chore to listen to... every so often I'm in the mood for them, but usually no.

it's Lp5, chiclisuite and Peel Sessions 2 that are the easiest listens for me, though in the lead up to Quaristice, I've been rocking Confield, Ep7, and a 2005 live bootleg the most.

I am right there with you, man. Incunabula sounds really dated to me now, and i've found i don't even like listening to doctrine or basscadet, which used to be my favorites. And Amber was shit even when it came out IMO.

Tri-repete++ and chiastic slide are where they start getting really good in my opinion.

@ esky, being 44 and having been into electronic music all your life doesn't really mean anything. Electronic music is a very wide genre predating even your birth, so whatthefuckever. Like you said, it's just opinions. Glad you have some, it means you're not dead yet. But you have to admit, your post sounds pretty close minded and boring, y'know, like it was the opinion of somebody old and out of touch. I mean, it basically sounds like "gaaaah, we had real music back in the day, this is just a computer farting!" But yeah, we all like what we like.

I found Confield to be an easy listen, yet challenging, I also found it funky and evocative at the same time. Pen Expers is one of my fav. tracks of all times with the very strong old-skool hip hop influence. I can appreciate that you find it inaccesible, but since many of us *don't* think that, perhaps it has more to do with how the individual ear is "tuned", dont you think?

i disagree, I find it visceral, intense and headbangin'... especially Bine, Cfern, Lentic Catachresis, and Pen Expers. It's mostly an ambient / head-trip record though.

where is Mcr Quarter available? Japanese release only?

It's a poorly conceived, self-indulgent mess of weak pseudo-industrial textures, and glitch wank. It sucks. Except for Mcr Quarter, because on that track - like Gantz Graf - they at least manage to kick some ass. For 11 minutes.

Everything up to and including EP7 has been consistently genre-breaking, memorable and hugely creative (although Incunabula is a bit "generic 90s ambient techno", lovely though it is). Confield is Ae losing it.

or, it's just where they lost you... it's a divisive record for sure, but I know plenty of folks who fell in love with AE because of that record, not in spite of it.

and yeah, Gantz Graf rules, all three tracks on there are amazing.

oh man, one of the reasons Confield is so great is that there are all kinds of buried melodies and sounds that even this many years later I notice for what feels like the first time. I just had this experience listening to Parhelic Triangle... there's a really subtle melody line below the chiming bells and thunderous bassline/drum track.

so i've been listening to it lots.
this album is reminding me of the experience of hearing autechre for the 1st time.

i remember the 1st album i picked up was chiastic slide. i hated it at first listen. just didn't make sense.
for some reason, it got repeat listens though. over and over until it basically became my favorite album.

the autechre songs that work are the ones that make your mind wander, that literally distract you from the music itself.
all of a sudden, your mind is active, you are "seeing shapes" ... just when you think it is your imagination, it becomes quite clear that the music got you there.

that's a good autechre track.
this new album has quite a few of those.

of course it also has lots of wank.
but i'm sure what's wank to me is someone's favorite.
