What "real daw" features is Live still missing?
Building on some other poster words, Live is a Real Time instrument disguised as a DAW. As a DAW, it does pretty well for me, but I'd add the following,
mostly in the MIDI area.
1) DAWs have to work with Plug-ins and with External MIDI Hardware, so call your presets by name instead that by program change it's a must. It can easily implemented without affecting the neat Live interface and can be left to User/Owner, to load its Names Program Change couples. The Power of text files...
2) Program Change in arrangement view has to be global at track level. I don't want to consolidate all clips to obtain this. This can be implemented as an override, retaining the current behavior.
3) Preset. DAWs provide content. Ableton should provide more presets that it actually does.
IMHO Live will never give up to graphic bells & whistles improvements or it will have to give up its inner Real Time nature. The only way is to slip session & arrangement into different products. The Real Time part has to be spartan. Today OS's are just too busy in redrawing useless effects on the screen...

Exactly! LIVE is great for what is does differently than any other DAW.knotkranky wrote:I don't want live to be a DAW anymore. I think that's screwin it up.
I use my main DAW because it is the best at what it does. I use LIVE as a rewire slave because it does everything else my DAW doesn't do.
LIVE should be:
INNOVATION NOT IMMITATION!!!
Keep it real Abes!

No, Live should be innovate not LIMITATE! (yes I know I made that word up).
Some of us here use live as our main DAW and we would like to be able to do simple things like group tracks, have crossfades, automate ALL of our vst's parameters, and have overall better midi implementation. We dont all work with basic audio clips, when I produce and play out live I'm mostly using vsts and midi data. These are simple things that could have been implemented years ago without making Live another cubase or sonar, but they'd rather focus on adding junk plugins than work on the core DAW workflow and features.
if you havent already I would seriously check out Reaper - as far as bog standard DAW functions go it's the mutts nuts
and you can buy it for fuck all really - in fact it's only your conscience that will make you buy it at all as the trial is indefinite, fully functional
there are things you might want a DAW for in audio engineering that Live could and should never do, and when there are so many great DAWs out there that it seems pointless to copy
on the other hand, there are workflow things that Live desperately needs fixing
like the automation - it is a total mess
but all the focus with Live should be on improving what it does differently

What we need is a hardware controller created BY ableton. forget oldskool midi, lets have a new usb device with led readouts and vu meters etc. A whole bunch of clip buttons, faders & pots and crossfader all laid out just like live.
Fat chance
