Jesus TD you really are a dipshit
guys, I have worked with grammy award winning artists, made top ten in Billboard, and I actually still SELL records in a dying industry. I come from a 'pro' industry and I am not talking about summing at all, nor did I ever mention that. You sum through an SSL or Neve, not a friggin computer. You guys are likely under 40, and think you know everything.
Go for Cubase, never Sum digitally. Sum your mono trakcs analog, then take your stereo stems and those can be summed digitally, but I never made a reference once to Live's master buss. I've never even used it... but then again I am not some youngster who shoots down other's input, though lately I have had to respond to a couple other peoples' negative responses, it's so freaking counterproductive though, especially on a forum. I know you were here first, but you can make room for a 'pro' right? We are here to learn and get better rgiht? I lke composing in this program...
I love the PSP too. The vintage warmer is great. Sometimes I'll use ten of those things on one channel!!! Love the Lexicon replicas too...
oh, and yeah, FUCK WAVES.

again on waves, read about 'banpiracy' an orginization Waves started where you can turn each other in anonymously for using k'kd waves products. There are many argments for/against these tactics, overall though, it's pretty shady in my opinion...I do feel their business practices overall are pretty slimey...
No disrespect intended.morerecords wrote:guys, I have worked with grammy award winning artists, made top ten in Billboard, and I actually still SELL records in a dying industry.
What you have stated tells me that you have connections more than anything else. The industry you are talking about does not impress me. Just like Hollywood Blockbusters bore me and make me glad that YouTube exists.
Times are changing and you should try and respect that you are very good at what you do but that does not equate with everyones idea of success or quality. Therefore there is nothing you or anyone can say that should be taken as law.
Bash me if you like but I know what I know and I hope you appreciate that i say your opinion is very valid... but i disagree with the definitive tone of your statement.
Try and keep an open mind.
And Cubase is shit - and even more so when compared to Logic.
Waves are a dodgy business that has missed the boat and will die up the arse like McDonalds.

I was going to say - I'm really surprised you said you didnt like Live's compressor - I'm VERY impressed by the new one - and I own the Waves plugs and barely use them any morejesso wrote: Havnt played with the comp in live 7 much yet, only upgraded recently.
.
seriously give it a go, they got a reputable swedish dude in from another company especially for it and it was worth it
you weren't talking about summing? then what? playback of a recorded audio file? This is not gearslutz/prorec/rec.audio.pro, and your "i am a grammy-billboard-ssl-neve-guy" has fuck-all to do with your credibility on a software forum where you've made a bunch of uninformed statements on subjects that have been beaten to death and buried a long time ago.morerecords wrote:guys, I have worked with grammy award winning artists, made top ten in Billboard, and I actually still SELL records in a dying industry. to the original poster -- yeah, I'd definitely recommend going Voxengo as a much cheaper (and occasionally better: Elephant > L2) alternative to Waves' comps/limiters/EQ, but I don't think most of those have been ported to Mac.
Whats all the fuzz about trouble mixing in live?
The only thing i find annoying is not being able to group the faders and move a selection down by eg 1db.
Maybe its just me
(and btw i got from morerecords that he said there might be some sort of compressor that performed some compression to eg the low ends, which probably helps starters not muddying and cluttering the thing so easily. Nothing about summing. But again i might have misinterpreted the whole thing, thats why i write it in paranthesis! But eventually they COULD have done it, and it would be a damn smart trick too.)

The basic waves bundle that I want is almost 1000. Thats a lot of greenery. I know it would be worth it, but its a bit too rich for my blood at the moment (baby on the way!)

I wouldn't spend a penny on the Waves stuff. Its very mediocre at best imo especially the "bundles" that come with a ton of Ok, C- run of the mill plugins. I'd get Logic, or keep everything in Ableton and use your money to buy something like a mid grade UAD-1 card instead and get access to some plugs that actually sound great while giving power back to your cpu at the same time.
well, if you're really happy using Live it seems pointless to get Logic just for the plug-ins because you'd have to use them in Logicjesso wrote:Ok j2j, so say your like me, and your using live for most everything, and your pretty happy with it.
500 bucks to get sorted with all the necessary plugins to make life beautiful and fully reverberated.
I already have:
Metric Halo Channel strip, (this is nice)
Camelspace and camelcrusher, (dont really use em)
A few freebies (sound ok, but arnt gunna set the world on fire.)
Synthwise, (although thats not the point) I have zebra 2 and a thing called quadrasid, which I lke mucho.
Dont own operator, or any of the new suite.
What would you spend the cash on?
Hit me.
defintely try Live's new compressor it's THAT good
maybe you should just buy a really good reverb? You can drop a lot of cash on a reverb and if all you want was a compressor and reverb then try the new comp and get a reverb seems logical
Thats great thanks everyone for all your nuggets of nerdery wisdom.
I much prefer to own the real software, not cracks. I find that I dont put any value on a crack. When I buy something, I spend a bit of time getting to know it, and It becomes something i use regular... its like having too much choice if you have EVERYTHING... you get less done.
Ive decided to spend my money on plugins and forget about logic for the time being... after all, if I ever switch over (just because I fancy a change for instance) I can take all my plugins with me. Meanwhile, Live is great.
Oh and ive been using the compressor on bass and vocals. Im having a much better experience than in live 6... way more natural and pleasing... to my ears anyway. Im getting a nice punchy vocal sound. Meanwhile.........
So far ive been demoing:
The sugar bytes stuff: Its a bit off track from my intitial post, (there not being a really cracking reverb that I can find) but I like the sounds im making with these plugins and the way that artillery 2 works... very inspirational for making interesting things happen to loops and bits of songs.
Does anyone have any experience of this stuff with live? It seems a bit unstable...
The PSP stuff:
Very high quality. The easyverb is cheap and sounds good. Vintage warmer seems like a must buy. The lexicons are lovely, maybe one would be a good addition.
Sound toys:
Love it. Love it. Way unstable. Need an Ilok.
Arts acoustic Reverb:
Quality. Sounds very expansive, just what I was looking for.
The budget is €500 (thats 741 US dollars).
Is there anything obvious im overlooking? Im on a macbook, otherwise I would be considering stretching to an external UAD card with that slot thing that is only on the macbook pros. That would be the shizzle.

I use Vintage Warmer and Arts Acoustic Reverb and i can highly recommend them,
not too expensive, easy to use and good audio quality.
And i small comment to this insane workstation debate...: If one doesn't get a proper mix out of Live 7, he shouldn't think about changing to Logic, Cubase or whatever. He should better work on his mixing skills. Live has way enough sound- and plugin quality to get a professional mix out of it. If not, it's the people who screw it, not the tools...
