Midi Timing & distorted audio problem in Live 7
Midi Timing & distorted audio problem in Live 7
I have just added a virus a to my set up as i wanted to move out of the vst world, but i am having a midi timing problem??? Basically the mdi from the virus runs slower then the rest of the track? I have played with the latency timing on the bottom of the channels but its still out of time?? I ahve also tried the midi sync options but that didnt work? Do i need to set something up? My friend is also having the same problem with his supernova in Live???
I am also getting digital distortion from the supernova?? I know its ok as when i plug headphones in the back its nice & clean?? Once again do i have to change anything? Is it to do with the buffers???
Any help appreciated, thanks

You need to post more info.
Like, how are you listening to your Virus and Live at the same time? A mixer? Recording back into Live? That makes a huge difference.
What sort of soundcard and MIDI card are you using?
Are you clipping the Supernova? I can think of no way Live would destroy a synthesizer. I can think of 50 ways you could set up a synth improperly, though. follow http://www.tweakheadz.com/setting_up_yo ... o_card.htm
Also, do you mean that the Virus and Live are out of sync, rather than playing at different rates (again, a very different situation!). How do you know the Virus is slower? Do you just have Live's audio warp markers set up wrong? Did you quantize the MIDI track that is being sent to the Virus?
Does the supernova play out of sync as well?
Why did you try the MIDI sync option? Are you using a hardware sequencer?

ok in response to your post:
Midi from ableton is sent to the midi in of the virus via my firewire soundcard which is a m-audio audiophile obviously the the midi out from the soundcard goes to the mdi in of the virus with midi out going back to the soundcard then back in again via the firewire. The audio outputs of the virus are plugged to the audio inputs of the soundcard. I then listen to the virus audio routed to the audio channel via the monitor in button, i then send the audio to the master output of ableton which is then sent to my soundcard wich has my active speakers plugged into it
The midi pattern i write in ableton playing a virus patch on the selected audio input channel in ableton is out off sync with the rest of my track: Ie it runs slower then my drums....|How do i know it runs slower??? Because it sounds later then my drums when your in the loop, i just write in a basic midi pattern to test my eqipment with a std 4x4 kik & snare, its pretty easy to tell when something aint right, i may b new to outboard synths but not music...
So i have ajusted the track delay on the bottom of the midi & audio channels in ableton to the same settings as my overall latency in my audio prefferances plus number above & below my overal latency. I have tried channging the buffer settings in the audio preferances but that does not make a differant.
I pressed midi sync because its a button & im new to using outboard equipment so the obvious thing to do is press it, afterall it says "midi sync"... Yes i have looked at help but you have just made it clearer, midi for external sequancers so it wasnt a complete waste of time asking my question. Im sure there was a time when u didnt know it all?
So is that enough info for you to help me with my midi timing problem? If you have any more questions please feel fre to ask as this is a right pain in the arse & i would like to get this resolved .
Thanks for taking the time to respond

Sounds to me it's your audio latency set too high(default?), and/or your not using directX or asio(asio being the best) drivers?
Go to ableton's preferences/audio, in the drop down list for input/output device try asio if you have it, else directX.
Now lower your input & output buffers(try different settings)...
If you go too low your audio breaks up, so set it higher.. It's a ballancing game.
Sometimes if you set the buffers too low(and the sound breaks up) and you raise it again, the audio still breaks up, just set the buffer high and restart live and try again.
Also in preferences/audio deselect your inputs & outputs you are not using.
Not sure about your distorted sound though...
Hope this helps...

Ava said what I suspected, so I agree!
Both the distortion AND the timing could be caused by bad drivers for the soundcard. I'm guessing they aren't ASIO (if you are on PC... are you? Mac could be another story, I dont know. But for PC, there's always www.asio4all.com )
In which case, you could potentially have both
1) too high of latency, thus all incoming audio (not just audio that involves MIDI/Virus) will be out of sync / delayed
2) too low of latency for your computer, and it'll distort as Live goes back to the buffers to play sound rather than keep up with incoming audio properly.
And by this I mean that Ava's sugegstion of changing the buffer settings may not fix the problem. That's OK, it'll at least isolate the problem.
If #2 is correct, this distortion will sound buzzy, perhaps you can even hear stuttering if it gets bad enough.
