worse, I'm a bitter guitar player.

with this debate and debates about faking on stage or what is music, I think the times are just changing. as I grew up there was no DJ worship and very very little synth playing, times are changing, peoples' expectations are changing, the norm is changing.

Daft Punk displayed a level of dexterity and musiciality with their Lemurs that only consumate professionals with virtuoso skills could possibly pull off. they must've hit samples like 20 times, and I thought their quantization settings were incredible!!
damn kids these days...
oh no a bitter guitar player! :D

look what happened in the 90s with dance music...so much of the piano stuff got put out there that songs became "just another piano house track"

the same has happened with indie bands this last couple of years, bands are becoming "just another indie band" so us kids (ill stretch kids to being up to the age of 26 so i can fit in :P) are looking for something exciting, and damn these djs and electronic acts are feeding us like we're new born babys, theyre giving us what we want and we love it

who cares about mainstream and selling out these days and not doing as much work as a guitarist?

guitarists get their guitar and learn the chords / notes and then make some songs

computer folk learn the software / hardware and possibly keyboard/piano chords scales etc, then write songs

if someones musically talented they will make a good song, regardless of what they are using

its all music, thats all that matters!

I make music with a guy who knows how to play chords, scales and almost has perfect pitch

I know like 1 chord

anywayz - he can't put all that together and make it sound cool with edits, effects etc etc

I can't play an instrument to save my life (I know a little piano but not enough to make a song) but I know how to edit, move around on the computer and various computer applications, mix, use effects, chain effects and program synths patches and efx's

when we come together we make some bomb music

There's mathematician's who can write some amazing algorithms but wouldn't know how to write the algorithm in a computer language

we all have our strengths and weakness's - but if we stop fighting about them and start working together some awesome things can happen!

:)

look at me, being all middle of the road on this one ;)

aha yes prime example of having the knowledge, but when it comes to hands on creativity, duhdurrr....a painter could have knowledge of all the techniques, all the brushes, all the paints etc but when it comes down to painting, if hes not that creative hes going to fail

thats why we have cover bands in the world - for people who can play but cant write :D

then there's the experience you have knowing how to drop the right song at the right time while DJing to a crowd.

how about this, I'd put money down that ANY of the goons here could've put on a goofy costume and pulled off exactly what Daft Punk did live at the Grammies. I've seen 3 year old kids playing with Live on youtube pull off performances of sorts.

does that make it invalid? IMO no, it just means it's no big deal.

but I know the geeks in us all went OMFG THOSE ARE LEMURS!! and got all excited in those few seconds.

ah yes, the elusive art of programming

programming two tracks to build and release on just the right beat to create a certain effect

I love it when people rag on dj's and how easy mixing 2 records is

put 'em on a stage and perhaps they can beat match but...

can they hold a crowd, can they build it up and break it down?

My biggest pet peeve is wack ass dj's who don't know how to program

you can tell

just listen. They usually play through breaks while one records beat is stripped out you can still hear the other track(The one being mixed out of) Typically the track they're coming out of is all eq'd wrong and off beat - I just want to beat those guys

i realy don´t understand why daft punk has such a big audience in 2008 ... ok , in 1995 they released da funk, it weas realy cool at htat time to bring some funky basslines and some nice fitting vocoded funky vocals into the dance music scene ... but 13 years later their stuff sounds like in 95.

ok, they now use some new trigger fx because of the newer technologies ... that´s all ... imo their sound doesn´t have advanced (except for their technical skills) ... the same fuckin shit as 13 years before ... realy poor and boring!

but hey: different strokes for different folks.
