new bass rig... any bass players out there?
Hi to all my bass playing buddies:
I have a SWR Workingman's 4004 400 Watt head w/ a SWR 4x10t and a 1x15t. Decent rig.
I was thinking of downsizing, but upgrading in quality to an Ampeg. I was thinking an Ampeg 6x10 cabinet w/ a SVT-450H head?
Anyone know anything about the SVT-450H? Would that Ampeg rig be a good purchase in replacement of my SWR rig?
Probably the wrong forums to post a question like this...but whatever, the guys here are friendly.

i used to love ampeg until i played through an aguilar rig.... mmmmmm
but never mind that
i downsized too but i went for the Gallien-Krueger MB150S-112 MicroBass
i loved how my upright sounded through the micro bass.
and when i used it to pump my electric bass i was soooo pleased.
with my electric i can crank it plenty loud to cut through a drummer and 2 guitars.
i use it for my live rig but the D.I. on it sucks so i run a split through a D.I. box to the boards. works realy good.. i get full control of my stage sound without messing up the FOH sound.
and its so sweet to be able to carry my upright bass, my electric bass, my bag o tricks and my amp all in one trip
sorry to side track the question but man i'll tell you what i'm so done with luggin heavy bass rigs.
i'll get a fulll size rig when i can afford a rodie to go along with it

Damn, I'll have to try an Aguilar rig.
I love Ampeg cl heads. Those sealed 10" cabs sound great too.
If you just play electric, you can't really go wrong with that.
Doubling on electric and upright is a bit trickier...
I use a walter woods 2 channel 1200 head with a Schroeder 2x10 cab.
It can sound a bit sterile with my electric, so I run a sansamp paradriver (basically an ampeg svt simulator) into the electric channel.
Try to consider your volume/ power needs. Don't get a giant rig if your just playing small venues, your back will thank you.

i'm not sure SWR to ampeg is a step up, though it depends on the model obviously. and i also second the comment that you should only get the ampeg if you want that ampeg rock sound, cause you're not getting anything else out of it (i've had both ampeg and SWR, loved both, but very different beasts). and you really can't get decent bass sound by downsizing (i've never loved the sound of anything that wasn't effectively 2 cabs, whether 8X10 or, my favorite, a 4X10 and an SWR big ben.
Hi.
Dont do anything until you check out Markbass.
My God.
Life Changeingly good.
I also have an old Trace Elliot, and an ampeg Valve setup.
Both were heavy, and whilst sounding pretty good, especially the ampeg, neither can really touch the Markbass in lots of ways.
I bought a Markbass Combo with a 15 inch speaker.
For most rooms, it is plenty loud, especially if you are DIing it. Even for smallish gigs, once your not playing thrash metal, I was amazed at how this little amp can keep up, whilst still sounding musical.
When its not quite loud enough, I just plug it into an extension cab and it turns into a very powerful beasty. Could play pretty much any size room with it cos its pumping out 500 watts at 4 ohms.
The tone that it produces is something to behold. It is the only amp I have ever played (and ive played a lot) which really honestly translates every detail of the sound of your instrument. Now when I use any of my different basses, I can reallly hear the tonal differences.
The real dealbreaker for me though was the weight/size. There is nothing out there to touch it. Its almost like a joke. I often ask people to go ahead and lift my amp, and watch their reactions. Its astoundingly light. Dont know how they do it, but you have to try it to believe it. I can carry my whole rig with 2 hands. Thats a 15 inch combo with a 500 watt amp built in, and an extension cab with 2 10inch speaker in the other. The whole thing weighs less than and SVT head.
Tough as old boots too.
If all the bands gear was as light and well made as this amp, my job as a gigging musician would be sooooo much easier. The only other bit of gear that we own that comes somewhat near in terms of weight/performance is our set of EV ZX4 pa speakers, which I also love. But thats another rant for another time.
