Thinking of buying Reaktor 5?

Post by buckman » Thu Feb 14, 2008 11:10 am

Im really into Sound design and quirky electronic sounds and fx, as well as mad loops etc and was looking at Reaktor?

Anyone use it?

From the demos i hear it souds like i dont really need a sequencer as it does loops/chords/sequences on its own?

So can i use it on its own as well as within Logic 8 and Live 7.02?

Also once I buy it, do i get access to all the NI and NI USER ensembles as part of the deal?

Any good / bad experiences?

Buy it. You'll love using it within live. You can build sequencers, algorythmic drum sequencers and midi lfos in it and trigger stuff in live. Far more intuitive than Max. Any fx you want, except for convolution (yet) You can use it on its own, or you can render loops for use in live, etc. The online library is brilliant, some mad stuff there. And Reaktor 5 is extremely stable.

Live and Reaktor are my 2 main tools.

Reaktor is immense...
lots of quirky sounds and effects more than you'll ever have time to explore. it comes with some great ensembles from NI
and yes you get access to the user library with thousands of ensembles.
Reaktor plus live =infinite possibilities. its drum machines, synths, effects , sample manglers, and sequencers galore. great for coming up with new inspiration.
some ensembles are CPU heavy and some aren't. The more processing power the better. but even some of the greatest ensembles can be fairly light on CPU.
it can be used Stand Alone and as a plugin in Logic or Live. Im running it Great with Live 6.0.7 as a plug in on os 10.4.8 however cant speak for -live 7 or Leopard or Logic. or windows for that matter.
put your music where your mouth is......

I love Reaktor. For sheer versatility, range of instruments and the craaaaazy stuff that you can dream up with it - it's a real winner 8)

You can use it standalone and sample loops from it, and then import them into Logic, for example - or just use it in Live or Logic as a VST. The reverbs alone are excellent, for example (a great tip I picked up from this very forum :D ).

Two downsides: firstly, it can be pretty CPU intensive (well, it is on my elderly PC, anyway...). Secondly, it's quite an investment of time to create your own ensembles. But if you go down that road, the potential is there to make an instrument completely unique to you - for definite.

Yes, you will get immediate access as a registered user to the Reaktor library, and you can download stuff to you heart's content. The content varies in quality, but there is some excellent stuff there. And the forums are a very good place for technical Q&A. Why not download the demo?

So, in summary: yeah. it's alright, I suppose :P

Edited for correctness: excuse my ridiculous generalisations about CPU usage....Man, I'm dumb today. But Cloak has it spot on :)

!?!?!!?! What?

Reaktor 5 (under OSX Leopard) is extremely UNstable in Live 7 (and Live 6, 5 etc)
If I need to get into Reaktor I have to switch into Logic Pro.

Could be - things seem to have got worse with 10.5 in terms of Reaktor crashes (tends to be more the non-Native Instruments Library sounds which crash Live), but it was already pretty bad in 10.4 anyway!

I don't have Logic 8, so I can't say how Reaktor fairs there but it is *rock solid* in Logic 7

I love Carbon 2!!!it can do everything : Wavetables, VA etc..
Superb Filters...
Fatcat from the user library is a must have too(good Minimoog Emulation)

Ni ensembles like carbon are really stable, but i also get crashes with some users ensembles...
