OT Aaaaaaaaaargh!!! My eyes! My EYES!!!
Anyone here using an iMac? How the hell do you turn the brightness down? All my brightness settings are down to zero, I've even tried recalibrating the display and it's still burning the back of my skull. Apple Support just say "that's the way they're made now" WTF!

There should be brightness controls on the keyboard, normally f1 and f2. they should turn down the brightness right down till the screen is black

Perhaps go to a photography store or film lighting supply house and get some sheets of ND (neutral density) gel.

These you could cut neatly with a craft knife and blu-tack or whatever to the front of your monitor. The more layers, the darker. It won't affect the colours of your monitor because neutral density is designed to be just that, cut the light evenly accross the spectrum.

I've got a G4 Powerbook where the display can be turned all the way down to black but there definatley seems to be no way to do with the iMac 24". A major screw up by Apple I reckon. My 12" powerbook attached to a 23" cinema display.
The powerbook screen will go all the way down until the screen is black. But the cinema display has always been too bright in a dimly lit room, even with it's brightness control turned down the whole way.
However...

Works a treat. Many thank iivanov, cheers!

the software and the keyboard buttons only control the brightness of the laptop screen, the signal that is sent trough the DVI output wont be altered.
i'd recommend a heathy dose of 15 minutes full brightness for a nice brown skin tone
though.
