Hi all.....
Hi all.....
...I'm new here, so I thought I would say hello.
Right, I have several pieces of MIDI gear and I really like the sound of Ableton Live 4. So, a few questions:
(1) Can I use Ableton just like Cubase? I don't do particularly advanced things in Cubase. I use it mainly for sequencing and the odd plugin.
(2) What for you is the most attractive feature of Live 4?
(3) Can Live 4 totally replace Cubase, or is there still a need for Cubase?
(4) Does Reason 2.5 work nicely with Live 4?
Many thanks,
808

Hello 808,
Regarding question 1 and 3:
Live is revolutionary. You can work in Live like you would with cubase. But in a faster way.
Live could definetly replace cubase, but it needs some growing time. Dont get me wrong, some cubase users around here have ditched it for live 4. there still are some issue's regarding PDC or the sound quality. Ableton is soon gonna release version 4.02, so i'm not going into it further without trying the new update.
question 2:
Live still amazes me every day. This forum is a goldmine for finding great tricks and tips. i wish they compiled the info though
and question 3
It works perfect for me. Although Live 4 makes me wonna ditch reason to.

It's the same thing with me and Logic, I am tracking and looping all the songs I did in logic now, it takes forever and I know that I'll regret it if I didn't, but I'd rather be doing new stuff in Live4...WRT Reason, forge wrote: I have loaded it up but only to do re-edits on tracks that were laid out a long time ago

personally I mostly use the native instruments synths and microtonic to generate the sounds - but I have done a fair bit in live with just a microphone - you can warp everything so much you can actually turn your voice into anything - if you think outside the box there are no limitations (god that sounded like a car commercial) sorry for the cornyness808 wrote:So if you aren't using Reason to generate your sounds, what are you using? Hardware, VSTs?
Ableton Live isn't used for the generation of sounds is it?

Well... TBH, 'simpler' does not compare to a 'proper' sampler with keygroups and velocity switching and stuff, but you only need that for playable multisamples. But it's not that Live *has* a Sampler - Live *is* a sampler... the way you can process audio in it and build loops from single hits is second to no other app out there, IMHO.

All of my outboard gear feeds into Live. It's like a big growling octopus of sound. It makes my computer cry for bigger hard drives to be added.
