I've used an EMU 1212M (PCI), a FW410 and a Presonus Firebox. FW410 definately had poor sound compared to the other 2, which were about on par. I don't have high end monitors and my ears aren't in the best condition, so I was really supprised how noticable the difference was.
Firebox seems to be much more stable for me as well on both PC desktop and mac laptop.

Don't buy it: I've used it for 4 years and...
Latency -> very high
CPU ussage -> very high (in my 867 PB G4 you can see the difference between using it or not. I swear you)
Inputs/Outputs -> Not Balanced (Shit)
MIDI -> Never worked fine or simply not work at all depending on OS. In Live's MIDI prefs you can see it in the menu and choose it but doesn't work. This is my Mac experience, in other hand, my girlfriend has a VAIO PC, and She can get Sync with me. (I use an steinberg 2x2 for MIDI)
Audio Routing -> it's ok but ...
D/A Converters -> Very Metal/Crystal like for my taste, for example, the old M-audio Quattro USB one sounded better
I want to sell it.
My choice at same price/range: The MOTU Ultralite
http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/ultralite/
If you got more budget take a look at this one
http://www.mhlabs.com/metric_halo/products/mio/uln2/
it's great and you can add more I/Os if you need with the I/O expansion module
http://www.mhlabs.com/metric_halo/products/mio/2882/
All of theese can work FW Bus Powered or with AC adaptor
If you need a very very high end A/D, D/A converters, and money is not a problem try Apogee

hope to help you

last week i downloadded the new beta version drivers for leopard. audio works, but midi is the same, you can see it and choose it from midi prefs, but doesn't work at all.
If it isnt too late and you don't need lots of outputs, the best choice without any doubt is the Apogee DUET. maybe you know it.
360€ one input, and one output (both stereo of course and ballanced), simply the best quality AD/DA converters of the market. and is pretty and beautiful.
