Help! strange error message in live

Post by jedeye » Sat Feb 10, 2007 11:44 am

Last night my laptop crashed and whenever i try to open my work an error message comes up saying ( syntax error : a class ID was expected, but "Mi' was found instead.) any ideas? will be gutted if i've lost all that work!! :/ when i opened live this morning, all plug in paths & soundcard settings had gone. it will open other tracks just not the one with the error message

tried system restore but the same error message still pops up

( syntax error : a class ID was expected, but "Mi' was found instead.)

thanks

Hmm there's some trick about looking in the temp folders or something like that. Or a temp file which you rename as an .als file

something

I had this message a week ago on someones machine and I did salvage the project.

- Find Preferences.cfg, delete it

- Rename your VST folder to something else, or move the .DLL files into a temporary directory

- Restart Live

- Try and open your project

These are the first two things to try, the CFG file is often corrupted and starting with clean preferences often fixes it.

Also, temporarily taking your VSTs out of the equation temporarily is a good idea because these are often involved in the problem in one way or another

Firstly, thanks much for the reply.

I tried the first part of your suggestion, but it just asked to install the library again. I chose not to do this, so I didn't really test your solution.

However, in searching for the preferences.cfg file I stumbled upon the folder below, which had a backup from when the crash ocurred. So I just copied it over my corrupt als file and.... voila!

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Ableton\Live 6.0.1\Preferences\Crash

Thanks again for the help and I hope this post helps fellow corruptees.

Live will also sometimes make a folder called crash, in it's user folder, but this depends on when it crashes, you may be able to rescue stuff from there too.

so if you get this error, the .als file is just totally gone. is that correct?

to add:

i have the same error. it was with a track i was working on, and for some reason it took forever to render. then it said a "serious error occurred" and i had to reboot.

i came back up to re-render. and got the syntax error.

i've dumped the cfg, i've done the VST hide, all the things that were done above, AND i sent the .als file to a friend who tried to open it, and got the same error.

is there ANY way to salvage a corrupted .als?

Unfortunately i can't help you in this specific situation. but you should make backups of ALL of your files on a regular basis to avoid this.

I hope that there's a way for you to get this sorted out!
