Logical solution...
I use ableton for all electronic music production at the moment, but when I record my rock band...I use ProTools LE...
But I keep running into the same expensive ass problems with the plugins - hardware...
What do you guys think about apple's logic as compared to protools LE...looks like I could get a much professional sound even with rock bands...AND it would probably cater more to electronic production as well...
comments?

I record rockbands myself, and i have to say Ableton absolutely "rocks" for recording them. I make a new Liveset for every Song and record multiple takes in the Session view - for me by far the most convinient recording solution.
Name your Tracks, while recording the next take you can name the previous scene, very fast and clean. you can step through your takes by useing the scenes, than choose the best one and drag it to arrengement view.
MIXING and esspecialy EDITING is another thing - You can do it in Live, but the lag of crossfades and so on make it much harder sometimes.
Logic would be a nice solution, no doubt, but you could also try out reaper to save your money.
I fo myself would prefer to record in Live, perhaps export to do Editing in another App and than Mix in Live or whatever (it s the plugs, not your host...)
my 2 cents

I agree ... very fast ways of recording takes...Dr Dub wrote:I record rockbands myself, and i have to say Ableton absolutely "rocks" for recording them. I make a new Liveset for every Song and record multiple takes in the Session view - for me by far the most convinient recording solution.

both in session and in arrangement...
alot of times I just leave the artist alone and let him record his own takes...
'select next scene on launch' and just let the singer press 'Enter' when he wants to start a new take...
(hooked up 'enter' to the kbd in the studio via bomes)
very neat looking and organized sessions at the end of the day...
this is where live's file architecture (Project->Set->Track->Clip) Really SHINES!
'nough said I use it to record always!!!

In terms of plug ins, you really can't go wrong with logic, the bundled synths and effects are all very nice.

the limitations of ptle suck major balls, esp considering how easy the program is to use. the price of logic for the instruments and loops alone, not to mention all the compatible hardware/software, is very nice, but it is MUCH more work to wrap your head around working in logic, esp if you have spent a bit of time with protools, even more so if you really only use live. i don't know if i regret buying logic, i really like the instruments, but i hate being tied to digi's hardware. the only models that have low enough latency for me to work with, sound like ass, and that's the usb's. if the firewire devices had dsp like the rme's and motu's, i would have stuck with protools, and gotten a 003 while they were offering the hardware update+the music production add-on, for a little more then the logic/rme combo i went with. but that came with a dongle, which is another reason i switched... yet i work in pt more than logic, maybe because i haven't spent enough time with logic yet...
if i had a choice, i'd run 1 hd card, and 1 i/o with live on a seperate computer. but i cannot justify, nor afford the hd setup. and lets not forget that goddamn dongle=)
but i view live like an instrument, and protools as a recorder. running multiple computers is not so different than how the old timers=) ran multiple synths. it's how i like to do things. .02

I relate to this post very much...dcease wrote:the limitations of ptle suck major balls, esp considering how easy the program is to use. the price of logic for the instruments and loops alone, not to mention all the compatible hardware/software, is very nice, but it is MUCH more work to wrap your head around working in logic, esp if you have spent a bit of time with protools, even more so if you really only use live. i don't know if i regret buying logic, i really like the instruments, but i hate being tied to digi's hardware. the only models that have low enough latency for me to work with, sound like ass, and that's the usb's. if the firewire devices had dsp like the rme's and motu's, i would have stuck with protools, and gotten a 003 while they were offering the hardware update+the music production add-on, for a little more then the logic/rme combo i went with. but that came with a dongle, which is another reason i switched... yet i work in pt more than logic, maybe because i haven't spent enough time with logic yet...

and I use Live mostly as an instrument that as I'm writing i'm thinking about how i woud perform the music in live...
with protools or logic...i'm doing recordings ...taking ideas i already have in my head and putting them down...live is more a spontanious creation that just kinda happens...

I just got Logic Express and am updating to Studio in a month or so. It's cool that with Express I can learn the basics and then upgrade to Studio for what would have been the exact same total price if I bought Studio to begin with. It's almost like an unofficial payment plan.
I'm really liking Logic and after working exclusively in Live over the last year or so I'm really liking working in a different environment. The plugs are amazing and I don't even have all of them because I'm only on Express.
As much as I love Live I also feel like I am taking things a little more seriously working in Logic, might just be a mental thing but we're all mental on some level.

Logic
Logic's sound quality even at the same settings (96k) is much better than live and protools..I've had both and was really blown me away how good my mixes sounded when putting "ruff tracks" on CD that were not even mastered. There is defiantly room for both logic and live cause they are two different things but for serious recording editing work logic is the only way to go compared to live

Re: Logic
Please substantiate this comment
In what way does Logic sound better than live?
What scientific method did you use to come to this conclusion?
