If I was thinking about getting an MBP primarily for Ableton Live, is it worth getting the 7200rpm hard drive instead off the 5400rpm one? I generally only record one track of audio at a time, max two, in case that makes a difference.
Also, anyone with Quartz Composer experience that can tell me whether or not it would matter getting the 256MB video card instead of going for the 512MB option? It's a big jump up in price in the 15" models just for that (and the faster CPU of course, but I'm happy to forgo that). Cheers.

With only a few tracks I doubt you'd notice it. I anted the 7200rpm drive but ended up with the 5400 and I have about 50 clips with large audio files playing at once live and disk I/O hasn't been an issue.hereschenes wrote:If I was thinking about getting an MBP primarily for Ableton Live, is it worth getting the 7200rpm hard drive instead off the 5400rpm one? base model: larger HD, more RAM, multitouch track pad, Penryn CPU speed bump, more VRAM, among other enhancements, all for 100 euro less..Winston wrote:that's gotta be the weakest macbook pro update yet..
you're right.. weak update..
did you even read the anouncement?
I'm updating from a TiBook.. timing couldn't be better..
I wont lie. I have a 3 month old MBP, and i am glad. None of this new crap!

Its wierd though... i wonder why they use the 2.4 ghz on the base model?
it only has 3mb cache and they use the same one on the MB....
i cant see why the MBP would be that much better than the MB...i mean 2gb ram, same processor... ok i get that graphic card is more expensive with GDDR3 and all but still...i think that the price difference is bigger than the performance diff.
Do you think that the decreased cache size will impact performance more than the architectural change?
hmm...hard choice though, does one dare to give the MBP another try?
btw...anyone noticed that they´re cheaper?

is the L2 cache memory on the cheapest 2,4 MBP decreased? now it,s 3 mb on the cheapest model so what was it on the older model?
also i am curious about the noise off the 7200 disk.
Here are some links but every information is welkom.

Dunno, but look at it the other way in a positive light. That's good reason to just pick the base model and save some dough. Looking at cpu speed only, and not the other features, the speed gain by upgrading to the top models is not really worth the extra cost.Silence wrote:Its wierd though... i wonder why they use the 2.4 ghz on the base model?
That's why I decided to go with the macbook. I just placed my order.Silence wrote:it only has 3mb cache and they use the same one on the MB....

For purposes of creating music, it's almost just as fast but in a smaller more portable package. With the current lineup, the middle or top MB are also more cost effective for power users who upgrade frequently. (Less depreciation per computer per year.)
With this current lineup you can almost think of it backwards who the MB and MBP pro is best for!
Standard MB for the pro - speed is just as pro as the pro model, durability isn't that important for pros because they will sell it in 2-4 years anyway. By the time it breaks or the warranty runs out, it will be time to recycle it and buy a newer faster one anyway. <- Extra bonus here for not needing to buy apple care!
and then MBP for the consumer - (low power internet surfer/email user) who can hang onto a computer for a long time and not substantially benefit from speed increases or new technology. (Safari runs just about as good on a 5 year old laptop than a new one.) The MBP has a better construction and metal parts which will not wear as fast or break over time. It's worth them paying a little more because it will last much longer and suffer a lot of typical consumer misuse and abuse after the warranty expires.
Yes, the base models have less L2 now.JAMM wrote:is the L2 cache memory on the cheapest 2,4 MBP decreased? now it,s 3 mb on the cheapest model so what was it on the older model?
