i currently have a usb midi controller which im not too happy with. i am experiencing some latency.
would a firewire midi controller solve this problem or are my Live settings all wrong?

Firewire midi controller is quite a concept. I don't thik it would solve your problem though.
Did you check your Driver Error Compensation in the preferences?
Options > Preferences > Audio > Driver Error Compensation : set it so your Overall latency gets as close as possible to 0.
Also try changing your buffer size...

I've never seen a Firewire MIDI controller BTW. And it would be a complete waste of bandwidth.
Now, OSC over Firewire, that's another thing, or audio+MIDI, but just MIDI - no. No need.

On this subject, anybody have any insight into MIDI Time Stamping? At one point Emagic, MOTU, and Stienburg all had versions of this available for supposedly improving jitter etc.
