2 many delay ?

Post by agodzillab » Sun Mar 02, 2008 9:19 pm

using live with MIDI i have big delay :P
i have a digi001 buffer is 256 but even if i put it on 128 doesn't change much /P

on the top left of LIVE you can see midi IN and midi OUT lights.
if i hit a key midiIN goes instantly on (as i can see) and midi OUT goes on short time after if no plug in on the track.
But if i put LOOOOTS of audio plugins in the track then midi out goes on long time after midi IN. why ? why does audio "interact" with midi out latency ? sure i missed something .... 8O

my old atari 520 cubase 2.0 had no problem with latency

If you're using Windows then make sure your Midi ports are all set to MME instead of DirectMusic. DirectMusic is one of the big promises of Live 7 but is completely bugged at the moment (MME is bugged as well, but far less problematic).

I think that the mention of lots of audio devices indicates that Live is probably just calculating the latency of those plugins.
Certain plugins can put an unearthly amount of latency into the system. The free version of SIR reverb puts something like 1 second of latency in there !

Yep, some plugins are nasty beast there. Check your "Plugin Buffer" setting in Preferences though. Usually they are set to the same value as audio buffers, but you might want to try set values (anything below 256 will increase CPU load but lead to less latency and more stable timing).

thx all for answer :)
PDC
Plugin Delay Compensation(?) is set to 0. is that "off" or is their a way to bypass it ?
Midi ports are all set to MME
m i'lcheck that. my digi001 is ASIO (no MME)
and i use midis port 4x4 from maudio .. but i find no settings about MME :P

i'm ok for live to calculate what ever he wants about audio. but when MIDI comes in it could go OUT with "no" latency. their's no heavy plugins on midi + it's very easy for a computer to work on midi. + all the midi chain keybord > IN > LIVE > OUT is before audio chain. why is there such a difference between midi out and in and why does it "follow" audio plugin charge (scuse my english isn't good :P)

i'll try to find more about MME and buffers thx ..
i found that closing and reloading LIVE i have no latency :?
time is going on a latency goes up! that's amaysing. How can i play live if i have to reset computer all time ? lol
i have P4 2.8Ghz / 1Gram / XPsp2 / digi001 card

in live 7 the 'off' switch is in options menu -> delay compensation.

(from memory)

regarding the latency growing over time, then being reset : is there a particular 3rd party plugin involved which might incur latency? EG- some kind of sampling effect , or a weird look-ahead compressor?
it may be that it is reporting its latency incorrectly to the host.
That's a guess.

failing that it, might be worth contacting support@ableton.com to see if they can help. because your situation seems unusual to me.

yeah you'r maybe right.
i was happy with no latency amoment ago than insert a beatFker and latency goes up :P
when i delet the beatfker .. latency is still annoying have to reboot.
i'll test with live plugs only ...

Midi Port Type (MME vs DirectMusic): Preferences -> Midi -> click on little arrow left of Midi Port name.

Plugin Buffer Size: Preferences -> CPU

i put MME everywhere.
an removed all weird "plugins"
works much better.
i can play midi with no annoying latency.
butafter a while latency comes back. it's quite ok but still strange.
i red people have same problem .. latency increase with time ...
