all notes off

Post by agodzillab » Sun Mar 02, 2008 8:58 pm

i'm using external synth controlled with Live (midi)
when i use midi plugins, i often have notes off problem.
I must press "panic" button because i' dunno where "all notes off" buton is in live.

ANYWAY why do i have so many notes off problems?
it comes specially if i put a controller on the midi plugin's bypass. this is absolutely anoying :P am i the only one ?

?

Of course you'll have stuck notes if you're controlling bypassing the plugin; the plugin's not sending the note offs then.

mac or pc?

what midi interface are you using?

what synth? how much midi data are you sending through the interface? sending any sysex? sending any timecode/sync data?

[edit] I just checked (Windows XP, MME midi drivers, MIDIOX) and for me, deactivating a midi effect will properly send note-off messages for any notes that it is holding on.

If you make three consecutive clicks of the STOP button in Live, it sends an "all notes off" message for all interfaces and channels. This should work like the panic button.

hi pip
yeah but would be fine to send all notes off but not "stop" to session :P (when in live)
did the midiox test show that desactivating FX sends all notes off ?
because when hit and hold a key then bypass a midi effects note is still on.
+ i see no midi out data coming out from live ... maybe all notes off is not understood by my synth : Omega from Studio electronics

i use :
PC XPprosp2
audio card digi001
midi midisport 4x4 (m-audio)
no sysex .. wel i red live couldn't send sysex .. only CC.. i would love to send sysex if someone knows the way)
no timecode
i use midi Sync
i send +/- data. when using live arpegiator i gess lots of notes are sent on fast settings.

Deactivating midi effects will send individual note-off messages for whatever notes that specific effect is holding, but it will not send an "all notes off". You'd need to ask ableton or experiment more with different midi plugins to get a fully accurate description of their behavior when activating/deactivating.

If you're willing to run midiyoke and midiox, you'll be able to view midi messages as they are transmitted, which will be very useful in diagnosing this problem. It'll tell you if ableton is sending the wrong message or if your synth is simply not receiving it.

ALSO: This is huge, make sure to go to Live's preferences and and under MIDI ports, expand each port (small triangle to the left of its name. it's sorta hidden.) and change port type from DirectMusic to MME! This resolves alot of midi transmission issues, including missed messages and high latencies.

MidiOx allows you to send all-notes-off messages, as well as the most elaborate panic button i've ever seen. This should help until we track down the bug.

Are you using the latest midisport drivers? (dated 12/31/2007)

Studio Electronics doesn't put their manuals online :-( you'll have to track down the midi implementation chart yourself.
