the sparkfun buttons are similar to the monome parts but they don't prevent 'ghosting' which is when certain combinations of buttons are pressed others can light up due to the way the grid is laid out.
but picking out buttons is like picking paint colors for the Titanic before actually building it.
anyone thinking they can make one for less than the cost of a Lemur and without months of tinkering and lots of swearing is sorely mistaken.
start small, grow from there. grab an Arduino board, see if you can just make an LED blink, then make it blink when you push a button, then get max and get max to control it. keep at it for a few months, drop at least $1k on it and in a year or two you'll be done and have a static, unchangeable large bit of gear. listen to Robert closely when he says it was tough to make.
+1 on just getting a Lemur. but if you're up to the challenge go for it, it'd be a great way to learn some electronics and software skills, if you don't want to make any music for a while.
