FW410 or FWaudiophile?

Post by glitcher » Thu Aug 26, 2004 5:30 pm

I know the specs on both.
Preamps etc. is of no importance,
I´m just looking for the most stable solution, for using
live "live".
(I will also have 2 more FW apps attached...)

All opinion/tips is most appreciated.
I´m on both PC and Mac.

Great forum,
great software.

I have a FW410, it's OK but you need to constantly upgrade the drivers, small things here and there...

Anyway, for real 'live' use I would be hesitant to use FW410 of many reasons

* there are problems, even HW Firewire port permanent failures, in case you mount and boot FW-based drivers at the same time as t he FW410.
* Try to have an iPod connected to your system at the same time as FW410, does not work, ough.
* Having a lot of external equipment on a live situation increases the chances they will be damaged.

If I would use Live 'live' I would look at an Indogo PCMCIA card that is part of the laptop myself, or a cheaper USB audio box that I could replace in case it gets destroyed in live use.

Otherwise the sound quality of FW410 is really good, I use it every day in my studio setup, and for the price, especially a year ago, it was a very good purchase. Latencies are low, and I'm happy with the resolution. If M-Audio would just put more resources on fixing annoying bugs in the drivers... But compared with a year ago the drivers are much better (MacOSX). --Kent

I haven't had a single issue with the fw410, it works flawlessly on my xp machine.

What machines are you on? Desktops or laptops?

If you plan on performing with a PCMCA ready laptop, I really suggest the Echo Indigo DJ.

Small, cheap, cross-platform, keeps your FW port clear for a HD, uses very little juice, cheap, stable, low-latency, inexpensive, and with a prelisten channel

You could buy two for the price of one FW 410

BTW, I hear the Audiophile doesn't have a pre-listen channel...
15" PB 2.5 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 750 GB HD, Live 9 still no cue points or program change messages?!?. Doesn't do shit.

Thank you guys, this forum is active!

I´m on a dell laptop and will make the switch to a shiny G4 after this
gig.

The FW audiophile do have a prelistening, as does 410.

I´m closing the deadline and have to get a stable soundcard like
yesterday...The local store have Maudio so I need som advice.

OK, I´ve checked the specs. on that Echo Indigo DJ card,
and I´ve talked to some folks, it seems like a very good card.

Anyone with something bad to report on this?

I'm very happy of my Firewire Audiophile, both on laptop (through a PCMCIA/FW card) or on my normal pc

Echo Indigo DJ: I have loved mine from day one. The driver install is a bit buggy, but once its set up, it works flawlessly. Do a few forum searches to see the latency some fols are getting (some as low as 2 ms!).

If you need to do any recording, I hear the Indigo I/O is good too. Same low price.

Search the web. I got mine for $159 with no tax and $5 shipping 2nd day.

Florida Music I think.

Good luck

Thanks guys.

I´ve just ordered the Echo Indigo DJ card....

Since I´ll need the firewire port for the other apps,
I hope this is the most stable solution.

Searching the net for the Indigo I found good reviews and happy customers-
once they finally managed to install it.....

I´ll see/hear next week....

Have a great weekend!

BRILLIANT!!!!!!

Echo indigo dj.
Got the card today.
This is a totally awesome, incredible, wonderful and cool card!

I haven´t tried it in the studio yet (I have genelecs there) but
at home, with my logitech multimedia speakers and my beyer dt-phones
it sounds good, the installation worked immediately and to my surprise:
the "console" software is genius! I mean, besides from being able to
prelisten in Live, I can run audiomulch and edit samples in Soundforge-
AT THE SAME TIME!!! The live jamming just keeps on rocking!!
I´ve never dreamed it could be this fun!

You guys are the best. I had never heard of this card, I was totally fixed on getting a firewire card, now the FW-port is free for my HD and my secret babies.... Cool.
Thank you.
Thank you.

We´ll see how stable it is after my gig. Knock on wood.

no....no....no....NO!

It worked excellent until today.
Suddenly I get clicks when playing samples off my external firewireHD,
the ableton cpu and hd meters show nothing exceptional,
I even get clicks with only one wav-file playing in an empty arr...

The sound is clean if I switch to the Mme/directX drivers.
When using the ASIOechoWDM.dll I get the clicks....
I have tried with every possible buffer setting.

I have tried to install everything again but the clicks are still there.
The echo drivers are the latest.

Please, if anyone knows what to do, please, please tell me.
I´m on a deadline....
