every day I'm more amazed that they released this software

and that's simply because every day it crashes more and more and more on me. it doesn't help that I just got Reaktor and there's about fifty things that I can't do with it because Live will crash; but that's another thread. seriously, I think Live 4 is in beta mode still. why Ableton decided to sell it to their customers (who have up to this point all loved their software immensely) as is is completely beyond me. it's like Bill Gates started working for them or something :D "sell it now, make it work later" seems to be the new company motto.

ok. gripe mode off.

I really do love Live, I just wish it wasn't so damn unstable. I wouldn't play a tea party with it as is; let alone a large gig.

clearly this is not a universal problem or nobody would be able to do anything with live at all.

maybe it's not universal. I never said that it was. but check out the bug and complaint list on this forum alone. clearly many people have had problems with Live 4.

and I *can* use it without problems; I just have to walk on eggshells the whole time, careful of every mouse movement and keystroke so as not to upset Live and bring the whole thing down (or freeze my machine).

I purchased LIVE 4 the very first day it was available. The download crashed horribly and constantly. I reinstalled it with the same results.

Out of idle curiosity I clicked the "UPDATE" button in the "ABOUT" menu, and discovered that an upgrade was available. Although the version number was the same, I dutifully downloaded the “new version” and installed it. I have had no more crashes at all since then.

Maybe it was just a fluke, or maybe Albeton made a quick switch, but I haven't gotten an upgrade available dialog since.

I have to say that Live 4.01 is more stable than Sonar 3.1.1 on my system. I know this info doesn't help much but I think it does indicate that there might be issues with your set-up. My specs are listed below. Except that since I got rid of my Multiface and replaced it with an E-MU 0404 I have a much more stable system. I had crash after freeze with the Multiface. Yes, I know the Multiface is the dogs bollox but it didn't work with my set-up. I can only suggest trying out a different soundcard if you can afford it.

I suppose that if you have been getting on successfully with another host then maybe it is something to do with Live 4. But it's still worth trying out different drivers and hardware if possible to see if it makes a difference.

thanks for the suggestions. regarding my system.... I don't think that Live could have problems with it since it ran rock solid with Live 3 using the exact same set up. and Tracktion runs rock solid as well; no hickups or weird crashes, except for maybe with the odd badly-coded free VST. but Live crashes when I do pretty much anything with Reaktor as well as when I find one of its stupid little bugs, issues or shortcomings. hopefully 4.0.2 will fix this....

I have Reaktor but I've only installed the DXi as I've only recently bought Live 4. I'll reinstall the VSTi and try it out in Live. I have a lot of the ensembles that are available for Reaktor so I should be able to test most everything. Do any other Reaktor users face the same difficulties? If this is reproduceable then perhaps Ableton will be able to pin point the problem and either fix Live or encourage NI to update Reaktor.

I tried running a few of the NI demos that I got from them at the Remix Hotel and they all crashed on me long before I had Live! I had to uninstall them all and it kinda turned me off to their products. I've used other Vst's and Vsti's with Live 4 and no problems yet.
