IMPROVED! padKONTROL step sequencer, made in live 7 for OS X

Post by doc holiday » Fri Feb 15, 2008 7:26 pm

First you need to install farmpad from farm audio

Here is the New Improved version of my 4 Bar Step Sequencer

See the included read me for details.

Image

It's very basic and made to be expanded. I used all defaults for the instruments, so the sounds should load up for everybody.
In all honesty I only spent about 2 minutes putting the sounds together for this set. I wanted it to be easy to share.
There is one impulse on track one, and eight simplers on track two.
scenes 1-8 on farmpad control impulse, and 9-16 control the simplers
load the set, launch the two clips, it will be silent.. plug away at the pads to activate notes.. expand the set and enjoy

Here is my old 1 bar farm pad Step Sequencer
launch farmpad with this command:
farmpad -s 1 (this is only for the one bar version)

enjoy

farm pad is free the maker only asks for tunes if you decide you really like it

Nice, Thanks.

There is lots you can do to get more fun out of it. Try adding midi plugs, etc to the the various instruments.

Hehe... been playing around with this for a couple of hours now instead of programming the farmpad... ;-)

I will be trying to add more steps once i manage to not only play with it... IT'S SOOOOO ADDICTIVE!!!!!

Thank you, doc and everyone involved...!

^^i'v been building it since december, i wasn't using farmpad at first, and it took 48 midi tracks to make it work. farmpad knocked that down to 2
i play with it a bit, but the ideas of ways to trick it out even more make me put it away.. i've got a lot of work ahead of me, and i have the big picture locked in  but yeah addicted.

farmpad is MAC only,

there is pk[squared] and you can use that on pc, there is a version of this stepsequencer for pk[squared] buried in this thread:
http://www.ableton.com/forum/search.php?mode=results

I switched to farmpad as it worked better for my needs.
It took some trickery to make the lights light up with pk[squared]
you may be able to convert the new step sequencer to work with pk[squared] but that would be up to you.

I have no idea if the set will load up and play on pc without digging into the midi routing, but that should be easy enough.

how are you sending a constant midi feed back to padfarm to get the seqencer effect?

the pksquared sequencer sends a constant flow of midi pack to the kontrolpad.

really want to get this working over the weekend.
You don't need to send midi back to the pK at all for this to work.

I don't know if your version had a lit pad 'chase' across the bar or not. I got rid of that if that's what you mean. now you only know if the pads are lit or not. if you enable remote out to farmpad, when you load your set the pads will light up the way they were when you closed the set.

think of the pads as gates. if the gate is open, the pad is lit, and the note will pass.

Look at the examples below, i use velocity to make the notes increment through the steps.

the vertical row with some on and some off is the row you assign the pads to.

make the eight rows all hit the kick drum in impulse, then add a pitch plug to seven of the tracks to increment up to the other sample cells.

once you get the kick hitting, make a preset of the rack and load it into the others.

I've been rocking this setup, and it is a lot of fun to make beats on the fly.

I feel like it is currently somewhat limited to 4 beat patterns, and it maybe more useful to have 16 beat patterns. We could do this by creating a rack with the following mapping

Scene 1: Beats 1 - 4
Scene 2: Beats 5 - 8
Scene 3: Beats 9 - 12
Scene 4 : Beats 13 - 16

This will give a less repetitive more advanced drum pattern. But unfortunately would limit the pk to 4 notes at a time. I wil try and create this at some point, but my rack skills are noob so it may take me a bit.

I think there is a way with midi pipe to setup 4 virtual scenes (via the translator) of the farmpad signals, this would allow us to have 16 beats with 16 notes and is my end goal.

I love the app Doc thanks so much.

I have created a rack which does what i've described above using doc's approach. Instead of just 16 steps in the sequencer I have 64. I have created a midi file with 64 notes with velocities changing from 1,3,5,... 127. I have distributed the velocity chain values evenly across the chains and made sure the numbers match.

Now my problem is the sequencer only works for about half of the chains. Sound passes through some of them fine, but i'm noticing the midi input next to the chain on / off button does not light up for the beats which do not play. The chain midi input level and midi output level light up for the chains which do successfully play.

Any ideas as to why these midi levels are dark? I think this is my problem. Like I said I'm new to racks so I maybe missing something simple.

I can post the set file if necessary.

Has anyone got mackie emulation working?

I want to assign some switches to allows me to move around without touching the mouse. Up / Down / Left / Right / enter / trigger screne.

Nobby - Did you ge this working?

I've now not 64 scenes - assigned to different CC messages. The only bad thing is that i'm running out of spare midi channels / CC's.

Doc - I got the sequencer running in live 6. This is brilliant for live sets.

The possiblies are endless if you use the encoder on the chain selector to select different instruments / sounds.

Anyone using PKsquared / Padkontrol should deffinatley be using this.

Thanks Doc for your previous post.
