i just saw the chemical brothers live and feel worthless
gear question
the first time I saw the Chemmies they had some kind of sequencer running. it was matched to the loops and fun to watch during the show. it was rows of LEDs, maybe 32 of them, as each loop played the progress was represented in the LEDs. I was about 200 yards away and had no clue. any ideas? I think that's all that was on the top of it, maybe 8-10 tracks.

the chemical brothers are the biggest pile of shit ever. even worse than autechres dreary nothingness, this pair of trust fund faggots are the epitome of tunelessly bland MOR electronic bollocks. absolute crap, with no style or substance, appreciated only by mindless, easily satisfied dunces with zero social skills and heinous body odour. block rocking adats indeed.

I love their sound on "Out of Titbag" and "Tit Guitar" .. also dig "Block Rockin Titbags" and "Push the Titbag"
I'd really like to see you produce a city search type review site. That would be awesome.TITBAG wrote:the chemical brothers are the biggest pile of shit ever. even worse than autechres dreary nothingness, this pair of trust fund faggots are the epitome of tunelessly bland MOR electronic bollocks. absolute crap, with no style or substance, appreciated only by mindless, easily satisfied dunces with zero social skills and heinous body odour. block rocking adats indeed.

Just a little FYI for those making noise about faking performance and whatnot. Yes, they play alot of the misc stuff and stuff that's pointless to play live off a DAT. Yes Tom (with the sunglasses) mixes most of it on the mixing desk - much like underworld. He mutes and unmutes tracks, fades stuff in/out, delay sends etc. The MPC3000 next to him runs in sync with the dat, triggers some of the synths with midi (that Ed tweaks and plays by hand) and it plays some of the drums.
To be honest, with their kind of music, with so much shit going on all the time, with all the sounds sculpted so precisely to fit within one another, I'm not surprised they landed on this method for playing live. What's the difference between out of the dat and clicking on a few clips in live on a laptop? The laptop looks a hell of alot shitter, and ties them up doing pointless stuff when they could be mixing the track and making it work for the crowd. They DO play some stuff live (Tom breaks out a melodica in the Encore) - they don't fake shit, they never pretend to play something they're not. They're just not playing what you'd expect, it's more behind the scenes mixing and the flow of the tracks, bits of synths here and there, some live drum triggering on the mpc, synth line tweaking, that sort of thing.
Best live act I've ever seen, and I've seen my fair share of guys huddled anxiously over laptops playing 100% live, dragging and triggering clips furiously, tweaking a few knobs. That sort of performance totally doesn't suite the music they play, I'm glad they leave the misc stuff up to the dat and play stuff that's worth playing live.
edit: Sorry, the last bit was a little harsh, and heat of the moment. Edited to make the point I was trying to make...

saw them again tonight..
it was quite different going into the show which was at an entirely different kind of venue (outdoor music festival instead of an entertainment center) but they did play stuff very differently to last night.
the order of the tracks, the content and arrangement of some of the tracks etc were different.. and to be honestly i dont know if they have a few different DAT's ready based on the comments on this thread
but the show was impressive as last night and i still feel ashamed that their music sounds so bloody fantastic and amazing.

mosca wrote:assuming we were at the same Glasto - i concur with your roundup.I saw them at Glastonbury a few years back and was a bit underwhelmed to be honest.
It was just a jumbly mess with no dynamics, although to be fair I couldn't really get close enough to the stage to be enveloped by it and it was a bit quiet.
saw then during the first album tour and thought they were ok mind you.
Which glasto was this?
I remember glasto 2000 (hottest glasto - no rain) and the chems were headlining the pyramid, and that was awesome.
they had on stage screens and teh screens either side and teh atmosphere in the feild was brilliant.
That was the largest capacity crowd ever pulled at glasto with all tents nearby were completely trampled.
Not suprising - the legal capacity was 105,000 people, but the organisers said afterwards that there were more than 250,000 people on site LOL
60% fence jumpers

We were going to see them play a DJ set at glasto 2005, we reached the east coast tent and - then we walked streight past it, which was lucky because Hybrid were playing the G stage and they were fantastic.
