Box vs download, worth the price difference?

Post by Markeyz » Mon Aug 30, 2004 5:25 pm

I'm planning on upgrading from Live 3 to 4 soon. As far as I can tell, the loop CD is the only real difference. Can anyone comment on the content of that CD, i.e. styles represented? I don't use loops much so I doubt it would be worth it to me but I want to make sure I'm not missing out on something that would be useful.

Thanks.

That's a damn shame, but that's the first thing I thought of also, The Stickers......I heard the new ones are really hot.......I wish Reason had stickers.

Having a paper manual is nice. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is dig through a PDF file.

I like to put a nice black box in my bookshelf. Apart from that, and on a more useful note, the convenience of a paper manual is unbeatable to me.

the paper manual is awesome for trainrides and busrides, that are too short to get cracking with the laptop.

I wish the boxed version would get rid of the annoying copy protection.

Especially since I don't have the internet running on my laptop and I can just see everything going to shit while I'm away from an internet connection and need to format/re-install or something...

I agree that a physical manual is nice, but the whole thing I like about Live is that there is rarely a need to go to the manual. I think since what I really need are single shot drum samples I might be better with the download and spend the difference on a sample CD more suited to my needs.

On that note, does anyone have a sample CD of single shot acoustic drum sounds that they really like? Or a good place to get free samples?

Just curious if you've reviewed the .pdf for Live4? At this point, I've been regularly surprised by the additional features/functions/workflow that weren't immediately apparent.

I agree that Live is a great example of a superbly designed interface, but once you're done with the basics it's great to dig in and really learn what the application is capable of.

I voted for the boxed version. I do get very tired of switching to another application to read a pdf. Also, a paper manual can lay open to the side while I've got Live running full screen. Finally, paper manuals are always attacked by me with pencils, pens, highlighters, post-it notes, etc. It's a great place to write out notes, questions, etc. that need to be dealt with "next time."

Just thoughts,

Also the paper manual has a nice foldout, shortcut key listing that can also be used as a bookmark :) Nice touch!

Hi

Yes the boxed version is well worth the cost not only for the paper manual and CD but the box its self is real classy and a thing of beauty its strongly made and travels well.

Not like that crappy box I got with Cubase SX 2 it looks cheap is poorly made and when it came it was crushed on the corners, the CD's are in paper sleeves and the dongle was rattling around inside.

Good old penny pinching Steinberg

Recap:

1) 500+ MB of decent loops
2) Very nice quality paper manual
3) Tear-off cheat sheet for shortcuts

These are the the relevent ones. If a nice box and stickers are important then more power to ya!
