Ableton's new speaker-mic

Post by kovacs » Tue Aug 31, 2004 12:37 pm

I just got Live 4 yesterday and since I've only used the old Delta 1.5 version I am working my way through the walkthroughs.

First of all - impressive software, impressive tutorials, I'm very happy to have made this jump (I come from FL Studio).

In Lesson 5, "Record and Automate", on page 3/14 it says "...and speak into your computer speakers. You will see your recorded voice take form in the Chords track."

Great concept. I don't think even FL Studio would let me record via my speakers. :D

On page 11/14 in the same lesson it says to apply the "...Envelope" Edit menu commands, such as Deplicate Envelope.

Is this the same as "Duplicate Time"? I see no duplicate envelope option.

if you plug your speakers into your mic port, you ought to be able to record something. It should sound kind of like your voice, just recorded very poorly.

I know as a quick fix on occassion I've hooked up my headphones to the mic jack just to get a quick recording even if it was incredibly low quality.

a friend and i once tried that with his dj phones just for fun and the results we got were pretty good actually :D i guess certain headphones are better for misuse than others. and i tried it the other way round with an old mic instead of speakers but that sounded really terrible.

Abused many a punter and demanded many a drink across a crowded floor mid-set using the 'phones on the dj mixer mic in! Green Velvet also uses/d this for many of his live shows and quite possibly in the studio too on such pop greats as "Flash".

Cameras ready...!

This is true..I did a track years ago "put your head in the speaker" and all I had to record my voice into the sampler was some $15.00 headphones. It added a usable distortion and worked for the track.

Don't stop trying different things just because they aren't "supposed" to work a certain way.

Of course. I was just pointing out a funny misprint. Good to see that so many people here know how to misuse equipment. :)

If I turn on the phantom power on the mixer, will it fry my new (stereo) microphones and leave me with a desire for new headphones?

Will someone [who] ended up with fried or fresh headphones please care to share if I can turn on the phantom (yes yes, I know about not connecting mics when the phantom is on - I already blowed some mics this way)

Why would I turn on the phantom power? Because sometimes I make mistakes just cause of the fun of it...

Pretty please
