Genelec 8030As worth the extra €200 over the Adam A7s?

Post by jesso » Tue Mar 18, 2008 8:22 pm

Before anyone tells me to try before I buy, I live in Dublin and there aint nowhere to try em out....
Actually, that may not be true, I do know of a place that stocks the genelecs.... problem is they are quite a bit more expensive than I can get em online.
I dont want to waste the guys time if I have no intention of buying.
Its down to the 8030s or the A7s.
Either one should hopefully be big step up from the rokit 5s.
Anyone made the same leap?
Cash is tight. What I want to hear is that the A7s are all you could need, and the Genelecs are also great, but not neccesarily better.

:D

hey jesso,
I know how it goes in eire with respect picking up audio gear....
although in dublin you have the best opportunity, check out 'future sounds' ...not sure if they carry the products you are interested in, but they are the distributors for alot of big brand names. you can buy direct too...

anyways, I've no frame of reference for the reasons you described, but I use genelec 8020's and I like them lots. I'd go with the 8030's. fwiw.

ps: if you know a place that stocks genelecs just go and try them out....you're not obliged to buy them on the spot because you tested them....

In my personal opinion, and again this is just my opinion (everyone hears things differently). I don't like the Genelecs at all. I think the best thing on the market for speakers in that price range with built in amps are either the Dynaudio BM5A's or the Adam A7. The ribbon tweeter on the A7's sound great!!!

Just my opinion, I hope this helps. do yourself a favor though and don't buy the Genelecs I think it's all hype.

I recently bought Genelec 8030s. Before I made my final decision I went back in our monitor room one last time and tested them all out. All of the monitors have their strengths, but the thing about the Genelecs that sold me is their open sound, and the cohesion and range of the frequencies.

Before these I used my old roommates Event 20/20bas for 5 years. The events had a really cool loud woofie thing they do when you crank them up, and I kind of miss that. But I really like my new Gennies.

The Rockit 5s are cool too.

They're both good choices, but I liked the 8030 better.

I havent heard the genelecs, but someone asked me recently what monitors to buy for their studio. I looked around and decided the Adam a7's where the best choice for him. He bought them and was very happy.
Ive been doing some mixing and tracking round there and I have to say I am now going to have to splash out the £540 myself. They are simply superb. Monitors are all about individual taste but these suit my needs to a tee. I had no intention of changing but after using the a7's I cant go back lol.

I think the 8030 is better then the a7, imho the genelec has less coloration. But only you can deicide which one you like more...

How happy someone is going to be depends upon their previous reference points...

I highly doubt you'll get one and regret not getting the other. I do highly encourage you to take the plunge.

I just got some Adam A7s and holy shit, music is a LOT more fun to make now, they're fun to use and sound amazing. some of my old stuff sounds better, some sound worse. it has never been easier for me to discern the source of audio before, it's obvious. I didn't A/B the Genelecs, while I was shopping I came across a deal to get the Adams for $700, pfft no brainer (deal's no longer available.)

So subjective.

I used to have the Genelec 1030a's and sold them for the A7'S. Main reason was the fatigue: after an hour with the Genelec's I'd have to stop for an hour before continuing.
With the ADAMS, no fatigue at all.

p.s. FWIW,I monitor at levels which some might consider 'lower'; I can have a coherent conversation in my studio with a friend speaking at a 'normal volume.

p.s.s. For those budget minded: the Samson Rubicon 5A and 6A kill for their respective prices.

Probably better off with the A7s and a sub if you can swing it

i'm borrowing some genelec 8030s that are sitting on top of my krk v88s. i'm liking them quite a bit. i've never heard the adams but i can't imagine they'd blow away the genelecs like everyone says.

Thanks for that.
Especially titbag, as usual, a rock of reason.
I can get the A7s for €700. Seems like a good deal to me. Turns out the genelecs can be had for only an extra €70..... so that means that the price is no longer a factor. Better go and give the Genelecs a listen then!
Im upgrading from Rokit 5s.
Should I expect to be blown away?

8030 for me.

Yes did listen to A7 vs 8030 in same room with same music and I choose the 8030.

Very happy with my choice.

Both are nice though.

Haven't had any fatigue issues in 6+ hour sessions. But these things tend to be very personal.

I am sure you will enjoy either

and yes the rokit 5's are not in the same class as either
