condenser mic

Post by Cervantes » Wed Mar 19, 2008 2:57 pm

just got a brand new rode nt2000... have tried running it through two soundcards - tapco usb and edirol fa-66 both with of course, phantom power switch on. getting nothing. soundcards work fine with everything else. dynamic mics work fine too and show up in ableton no issues.

either this is something really simple and i am being a dumb ass or could it be that the mic is actually faulty?

any ideas mucho appreciated, thanks guys.

if you've tried this with 2 cards with no joy, there are 3 possiblities:

a. the mic is faulty

b. the cable is faulty

c. you are a dumb ass

b. is fairly easy to test if you have other mics to try, or other cables

my money's on a. but sure c. is a distinct possibility...

cable is fine, we ran a sm-58 though it and it works fine. its just the rode.

i spoke to source distribution in the uk, who are rode's support people. dude knew nothing about audio interfaces. said to try it through a desk, coz that's what professionals do and they dont know about these audio interfaces.

nice.

ok, the whole point of alot of these audio interfaces that come with a phantom power switch is that they are able to power condenser mics directly, right? no fuss. these mics dont take batteries or anything right?

i suppose there is an outside chance of...

d. the phantom power on both the soundcards is broken.

e., there is an 'on' switch on the mic that you haven't noticed (would this come under 'c'?)

can you borrow a condenser from someone to see if that works in either of the cards?

both soundcards are brand new so d. highly unlikely methinks.

its been 2 days and we're still lookin for the on switch on the mic.
....it just has 3 dials to set recording patterns - omni, cardoid etc.

yep, the edirol fa-66 has phantom power.

yes shall try with another mic, though my singer is a little impatient thus i am here.

get your bids down on c being the answer.
