unpredictable behavior in live 7.0.2. please help!!!!

hi, i have been using live for awhile now, and i'm having some serious problems with 7.0.2. one day it will work very well with reasonable cpu usage and minimal clicks/glitches, and the next day it will be off the charts. i have a show coming up in one week, and this behavior is making me very nervous.

one specific example of a problem that i am having today is the following:

1 audio clip playing within a large set (consisting mostly of other audio clips, a few ableton effects, and one reaktor 5 drum machine - turned off). when the only thing happening is the single audio clip (no effects on it), i get cpu usage of 30 percent or more. when i delete 10 or so tracks, the cpu usage drops to about 15%. i'm not sure why i'm getting large cpu increases when the other tracks are not doing anything. if i play 4 or more audio clips, the ableton cpu meter goes to 75%, my windows task manager indicates 100% usage, and ableton begins to freeze (keeps playing the audio with many glitches and doesn't allow me to stop anything. control of the mouse becomes difficult as well). often, this will continue long enough to give me a blue screen with the "beginning physical memory dump" error (driver error?).

a few days ago i had a similar crash that gave me an error message "Live has encountered a serious program error and needs to close." this went straight to the same blue screen.

my system is a dell precision m70, 100 GB hard drive (30 GB free), 319 Mhz, 1.0 GB RAM. Pentium M processor (2.0 GHz).
TASCAM US-122 is the audio/midi interface. i also have an M-Audio 02 keyboard hooked up through USB.

any help would be very, very, very appreciated. i'd really like to have a stable set for this show next week.

alright, so i did some more forum searching and tried operating the set on battery power vs wall power. no problems when using battery power. as soon as i plug in, the live meter jumps to 75% and starts to freeze. what settings do i need to change to fix this?

it appears to be my internal network card (NIC) that is causing the problem. as soon as windows attempts to reactivate it (upon plugging the computer back into AC power), ableton pretty much crashes. even if i have nothing running in ableton, the live cpu meter will jump to 30% or more (from 2-10 percent when running on battery).

i've tried disabling the network card in the device manager. this still doesn't help, however.

so, for now, i'm working on battery power and taking breaks to recharge.

forgot to mention earlier - i'm running windows XP.
