Useless Automation Arrangement View

Post by AbletonJunkie » Tue Mar 25, 2008 7:07 pm

Why aren't "Basic Envelopes" like MIDI Controller, Pitch Bend and Modulation Wheel displayed or editable in Arrangement View?

Am I supposed to go into MIDI clip edit mode for EVERY clip EVERY time I want to see where automation actually IS or edit it!

That's garbage.

Again, just about every other sequencer on the market today supports this.

Another "BASIC" feature omitted.

AND NO VST MIDI CC SUPPORT!

May be abandoning this sequencer soon.
:(

Get back to basics Ableton development team.

Jeepers, you call yourself Ableton junkie, indicating a love for the program, then all you do is cry and whine about it... Maybe jumping off the bandwagon to something else is for the best.

Nothing new. I've been requesting this feature since version 5.
If it ain't broke, don't try to mix it!

While it has some excellent and innovative features (Which have drawn me into using the application), the more I've used it the more I've discovered it's basic flaws when doing the most simple operations. I've named the most important two above.

No CC control through VSTi plugins.

No "basic" CC, pitch bend and modulation wheel envelopes on the arrangement view.

Those are BASIC functions to me.
They are absolute sequencer necessities.
They are available in just about every other sequencer on the market.
They have been available in those sequencers for MANY, MANY years.

Most importantly, there is no godly reason on earth for those features to be omitted.

But yes your right. I'm off the bandwagon. Because I favour basic routing and functionality over gizmo's I "like" but can do without in favour of a sequencer I know I can trust does those things.

I'll return to Ableton if those features are ever adopted, but like AlexG says, it's not looking very likely. I don't want what I "can" do to be limited by bad implementation, or become so complicated a work around that it's not worth me doing it in the first place. Ableton = Limitations. See ya.

Well, it all depends on what you need ?

I've completed 2 albums using Ableton Live 6 and 7, one an electro/electronic hybrid and the latest being an alternative/rock album. It worked fine for me and my needs in all cases.

I also have Cubase SX3 and have been using Cubase since VST 3.5 but I only do minimal stuff in it now as Live has become my go to program not just for tweaks and weird fx but as an actual fully functional DAW. Yes, it is not as mature as something as Logic and Cubase (20 years of existence versus less than 9 for Ableton). And it does lack some things that I would like too, but I find workarounds or render audio and finish in Cubase, but that is rare.

?

My reasoning for posting that is that I fail to see how complaining in the general discussion section will do much.

Also I don't use much midi with LIVE so I guess I was unaware of the "crucial" features lacking.

Don't get me wrong I'm sure there's plenty of limitations with LIVE, but to me my double baby wallop was a humorous allegory to people complaining about LIVE in general discussion.

Edit: Sorry for jumping on the "lets call the poster a cry baby" band wagon by rehashing that baby pic.
Pasha's reply below was much more constructive than mine.

To the original poster:

The smallest unit in Live is the clip.
Everything moves around that.
I was initially unpleased by the lack of a MIDI CC by Track feature opposed to MIDI CC by Clip but when you understand its power you could even change your mind. I do not think that the Abes will modify this. It's Live standard behavior.
You can overcome this by dropping a dummy clip in a track and then routing midi to the track playing clips and alter the CCs for all of them. Clean. Different. Yes, everybody has the habit to compare so this DAW has it, Live does not... we could run this for ages. Understanding the differences it's the first step to take. Knowing how to get the best out of what's in front of us the second. Stay with what it's best for you but stop complaining before differences. What makes things different is what make them unique.
