WII midi ROCKS TrY IT!

Post by Euklid.fox » Sun Jul 08, 2007 2:10 pm

HI guys, some may know, it has been discussed before
but I wanted to hammer back this a bit ,cause it reaaly worth it:

just to tell somme of you wouldn't yet know it's from a few time possible to get
the nintendo wiimote controler as a blutooth wireless midi ultimate captor.

Its one week im trying and it really, really, really rocks 8O

basically you get an internal captor of X an Y rotation for each hand
(the cheap 20euros nunchuk as also accollometer in it!!!)

so you can have 4 midi controls: +X -X +Y -Y for wiimote, same for nunchuck
also the wiimote as acceleration captors : gx gy gz (the fastest you move it detects acceleration (ie, if i shake the mote fast i put reverb so my breaks are no so cutty, and you can make infinite combinaisons:

ie if you press wimote A, then turning remote up will send a midiCC,
and the same move while pressing B will send a different message.

and last but not least, with a single cheap IR led on on top of your screen you now
are able to activate the IRdot tracking of the wiimote buit in IR camera, so
if there is one led, the wiimote sends out it's tracked XY position (amazing with crossfader), Im actually controlling my mouse cursor like this (you can paint on a videoproj, or control your winamp, but more eciting is live perf of mix ;)

and all butons + nunchuck joystick.

so Ive discovered it's at least for me the ultimate contoller, with unlimited possibilities cause your using a soft called glovepie that let you
script what imput control what ouptut:

ie: wiimote.dot1x = midi.control23 (the track of ledX is controling the crossCC23)

even better i can control the leds, the rumble and the wiimote speaker (yes there is one). Basically if i pressA i got the time left for my vinyl on A track(4led is 4min,3=3ect blinking near end,
and the wiimote will rumble if there is only 30s left, so I can play my live far away from computer having all infos needed....and enjoy playing in front of our 10KW sound system and check what real soundz gzt out, not beeing fixed on computer screen)

I really encourage you to try if a friend as a wiimote or buy one, they are really cheap for the technologie then can offer, you can dance on your sound
and really control many param with two hands, ...ur just in the sound

you need a wiimotecontroller: 40euros
optionnal extra nunchuk : 20euros
A wii sensor bar or home made ir led active: from 1 to 20 euros
a bluttoth ability or usb key : 0 to 20 euros,

glovePie carl kenner pgm. the ultimate scripting PGM with lots of included scripts. (Ive made donation to this guy and encourage you to do so as his work is amazing, and ancourage him to keep on.)
This pgm let you convert any input to output (mouse to joy, inverse, wiimote to keyboard, midigloves, even control your soundz by microphone,ect...)

http://carl.kenner.googlepages.com/glovepie_download

so its from 23 to 100 euros max, to get the most advanced midi controller
ever made at this time. and its wireless!!!!

hope some of you will enjoy as much as I did.
cheers :P

Does anyone know of a way to get this to work on a mac in OSX? Sounds really cool. Gotta do some searching...

A quick search brought this. Haven't tried it.

Thanks for the post!

I was kinda excited by the thought of using the wiimote as a mouse, but it is wayyyyyy too sensitive, would have carpal tunnel in an hour!

I tried DarWiin Mote with my original wii bar...

Has anyone gotten a Guitar Hero controller (any format) to work as a MIDI jigger?

I can see that being emosewa, with something like Bidule, Max, or Reaktor!

Plus sensorbar/LED?
or do you have any functionality without that already?

you don't need the sensor bar.

It functions with just the wiimote and bluetooth on yr computer.

with OSCulator it is possible to smooth the wii data individually for Acceleration / IR and Joystick, so making it less sensitive.

I'm actually having the opposite problem on Osculator it seems - I cant gt the pitch/roll stuff to work at all - the buttons all show up but nothing else

I've had it working on my PC using GlovePie - but Glove Pie is going to take a lot longer to get where I want to be because it's all scripting

Osculator looks so easy, it just wont give my that motion stuff :?

So... has anyone opened up a WiiMote to see how mod-friendly it is yet? If this GlovePie software actually works, and the bluetooth connection to the WiiMote doesn't give me any headaches, I may use the guts inside my next pedal board. I'm guessing the Nunchuck stick will make the best source for an expression pedal conversion, so I'll need to use one of those in addition to a WiiMote (for the buttons.) That's ~$60 worth of stuff right there, so I'll only go ahead with this one if GlovePie etc seems rock solid.
