Help, I want to replace (my notebook's) hard drive...

Post by Anubis » Sun Mar 30, 2008 9:12 pm

...to a faster 7200 rpm Hitachi. The installation includes a cloning utility that clones (the contents of) my C: drive onto the new drive, externally, before installing it. Will I lose my Live authorisation this way? Or will everything still work since it's an exact copy?

AFAIK its not always that cut and dry.
But I think it should be fine as you are only changing one component.

Live recognises your machine by checking an ID which it constructs from IDs/properties of a number of components in your machine.
So even if it does give you gip I'm sure the Abes can sort it out for you.

In short; I guess directly contacting them would be best.

I don't know for the live auth but for the rest

acronis true image home does the job pretty well

avoid the norton one at any price

the norton one is clunky, but works fine if you know what youre doing.

I find the acronis one way better, simple and efficient with a decent user interface :)

no argument there, just saying the Norton one does function perfectly well. it was only after they changed the name from Ghost that they borked up the interface. everything symantec touches turns to bloat.

Thanks Igor! Just what I was hoping to hear. Now what about the other apps that use a key for authorisation, such as, Reaktor, etc. Will they be as forgiving?

I replaced my hard drive a few months back and had no problems at all reauthorizing Live.
