Everyone I know with a PC, and isn't affiliated with music production, has a creative soundcard. Not because they went out and bought one, but because that's what wholesalers/retailers/DELL etc offer with the computers they sell.
their contracts with those kinds of companies are their major priority.
People are still going to be buying creative goods just as they have been the whole time.

This poses a little dilema to me. I certainly don't intend to buy of of creatives normal sound card range, but I am planning on getting the EMU1616m which is owned by creative. hmmm. I need to have a ponder. 
Does anyone own the 1616m, what is it like to use?

I own a 1820m, haven't used it in two years because I don't have a desktop, but can't bring myself to sell it. I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm just gonna have to buy a desktop so I can use it. Patchmix (the mixer application) is a bit crap, but 10x better than Cuemix which came with my Traveler (for one thing it actually has DSP effects, & for another they're actually useable - of course I'm referring to the old Cuemix & not the stunner that comes with the new 828). Dunno what the converters/preamps are like on the 1616 but I loved the ones on the 1820m.creature wrote:This poses a little dilema to me. Once I know that it works with my future-system-to-be I'll probably plonk down for the EmulatorX upgrade to X3 or whatever it's called now.
I also used to own a Vintage Keys - I did end up selling it, it was a pain in the arse to use etc, but the sound was amazing once you knew how to program it, and the modulation capabilities were sweet for what is essentially just a hardware module with a keyboard tacked on (I'd consider buying the module for like €100). I have to say I think E-mu's heart is in the right place. I've always feared being owned by Creative will be the End of the World of E-mu but hopefully not.
Creative is doing nothing dissimilar from many other companies. By making products artificially obsolete, you have to buy another to keep playing. Sound familiar?
Perhaps this Dave K fellow could get working on drivers for Digidesign products like my trust old 001 which was intentionally hobbled?

In a world where we communicate/share/exchange more and more .... They should thanks him for the job he have done, I think if a 'user' can obtain a software to work better than the manufacturer itself... The manufacturer have to be extremly cool with him....
I owned a Creative Audigy (years ago...) as my very first soundcard and I was only happy to use it when I found the Kx drivers... With original Creative ones, I've been frustrated so many times not being able to do this or that ....
Now, concerning E-mu, I own today a 1616m and I f*****g love it, I discovered it was a 'Creative' distributed product only few weeks after I bought it...
I think they distribute E-mu but nothing much more. The 1616 m is an awesome soundcard and the flexibility of the patchmix is totally enjoyable along Live's routings. I def recommend it.
No spam from my side but have a look at http://wildtek.free.fr, go to the 'studio' section of the website and look at the three RMAA tests realised with the 1616 m... Perfection.... Even RMe don't reach top scores like the 1616 m and they are the reference when it comes to pro or semi-pro level soundcards.
My 1616 m worked well on Vista since the very first day without the official drivers, some bugs of course but nothing really hard or suffisant to stop making music, a few workarounds to find was the only assle.
I think E-mu would benefit breaking relations with Creative, their products would be just even more valuable. Now, it's a business side we don't really know about.
But really, the 1616 m is actually one of the best choice for serious laptop musician.

Cheers for the info on the 1616m guys. I will probably still end up getting one of these as it suits my needs perfectly.

EMu is awesome, the 1616m and 1820m are some of the best sounding cards I've heard. But in this day and age, Emu is most definitely subject to the demands and whims of Creative. Creative is the reason Emu stopped all hardware production and went strictly to Emulator X and the soundcard range. I knew osme of the Emu guys when this happened, and it was an awful time for them.

A few things have been said about the realtionship between the capitalistic instustry and US, it´s costomers.
For me, in person, its been a long time since I feld any demand for a creative product, for what ever reasons.
But now it has changed a lot: I will avoid CREATIVE for the rest of my life.
This whole VISTA - thing follows the same plot: The producers say: Go to Microsoft an complain about Vista...
BUT: If You produce anything for a plattform You should consider its development.
If You dont: Bite the Dust and vanish in the desert of emty space - Get lost., CRATIVE what so ever - non of MÝ buisnness!
I had a similiar problem with a CANON-printer which was 1 YEAR old, when windows update SP2 appeard.
Guess what? They never developed a driver for the Windows update.
Guess what! I will NEVER buy any Canon printer again.

In these days of piracy I can understand why software manufacturers might get tetchy about IP. Musicians and labels also though that is of course another debate.
If a company that makes physical hardware that is actually recognised as a leading brand (for non-pro use) is incapable of profiting from it then they clearly don't know their arse from their elbow. More so, like Apple they should actually be managing to reap in some of the lost profits from filesharing (if said lost profits actually exist)...
