Warping only works in Ableton? Prob a double post

Post by fabaradj » Sat Mar 29, 2008 5:36 am

I've transfered a ton of vinyl into wave files and have "successfully" warped some of them--albeit with about a MILLION warp markers per track... Anyways, as far as Ableton's concerned, no prob, but when I render these tracks and try to play them in, say, Torq, its like I never even warped them. They still wander off of the phase grid less than midway through the track... WTF!? How do I save these files so that the timing stays corrected when used in other programs? What am I doing wrong? Is this an Ableton issue, or a Torq one...or is it a me issue?

Warp markers in Live are like the text edit/replace marks in Micrsoft Word... they only show up in Word, unless you "render" the word file to something like a .txt document.

The manual, as people have told you, is a great thing to read.

in all honesty, I think youll find most people around here dont really use warp markers anymore.

I dont think its an issue.

I already read the manual's minuscule section on rendering--and thanks to most of you, I reread it and have concluded that it is still minuscule. My Ableton Live 5 Power! book, is equally vague on this matter--I mean, it seems like I'm doing everything by the book, but the files appear to leave Ableton unchanged.

suspended childhood, interesting, but don't see what this has to do with my question.

doc holiday, I believe I did try consolidating once, but I'll look further into it.

Laird, some of the files I rendered had something like .trq in them. I tried to google it, but couldn't find anything. Know what that means?

SimonPHC, what the hell does beatmatching have to do with anything I asked? Or did you just want to slip in the fact that you can beatmatch. Apparently, I'm in the presence of greatness.

blank, thanks for the reminder.

longjohns, if I hadn't read some of your prevoius posts and determined that you are a potential wealth of knowledge, I'd tell you to go eat a piss popsicle. But I may need you in the future.

I'm gonna hazard a guess... that they aren't Live files at all... but these are files from TORQ?

Well, that's what I thought it might be, but they're just wave files--some of which have been PLAYED in torq--but I'm not sure how torq could've modified them. And again, not all off them are named with the .trq. Besides, if I rendered and renamed them in ableton, shouldn't it be pretty much self-contained? BTW, I've tried the torq forum, but it won't let me log in.

I (and probably the others here, too) are a bit confused as to what the heck you are trying to do.

Torq, it seems to me, allows you to load up audio files and then attach tempo markers to songs. If you saved the audio file WITH the tempo markers, isn't this a .trq file?????

Torq does not talk with Ableton. torq cannot see warp markers you made in ableton.

So if you warp something in ableton, Torq still has to find the right tempo. thus it seems to me when you say "its falling off the phase grid" this means you aren't using Torq properly. There is no phase grid in Live. This is not Live's fault. Live could be warping your files just fine, or you could just be adding warp markers to a file that has no tempo change and thus you get no result. We don't know what you are doing in Live, so its hard to say.

If you Warp a file in Live, and change its tempo somehow, then render that... you will create a plain old .wav file.

What Torq does or doesn't do with that is Torq's issue.

no. they will just be warped and associated to the specific wav files. you have to save the set as "self contained" if you want it self contained.

if you just simply warp a track, save it by pressing the save button, then the track can be drug into any ABLETON LIVE template you make in the future....JUST THAT TRACK, not the whole set of tracks as they were when you warped them in that original template.

I usually save one big master template for when I dj and the whole template stays the same unless I make a change, then I save the live set.

I dont think self containment is your issue.

I think you need to define what it is you want to do with each application prior to us helping you further....unless you have figured it out...but yes as said above, the warped tracks from ableton can only be read by ableton, and I am guessing the .trq tracks in Torq can only only be read by Torq....I dont have Torq...dont see a need for it personally.

that's an incredibly incorrect statement.

OP - how are you exporting your files out of Live?

careful warping vinyl, one subtle skip of the needle and it's a major bitch to get back on track.
