4 to the floor - help with stereo & mixing

Post by catch22 » Thu Apr 03, 2008 1:16 pm

I have been using Live for a few months now and before that Logic.
One thing I have struggled with particularly in Live is getting a real stereo sound to the overall mix – and to be honest the overall mix itself!
The more tracks I add, the more the tune tends to turn into “musical soup”.

Does anyone have any good tips / web links on how to get a more stereo sound particularly for synths and percussion?

Here is a track that is work in progress so you can see what I mean.
Probably best to download it as myspace compresses the file.

Any advise and criticism welcome!

It reminds me of Early Alex Calver, techno with Acid overtones, i think the kick is weak, and the intro very very repetitive, and the percussion lacks body

im buy no means as talented as some of the others who frequent this board, so bear that in mind :)

love techno though, d.a.v.e the drummer, chris lieberg :)

ok. thanks. i think you're right.
I'm getting very bored listening to the start of my own track!

I had a little play around this evening and realised it is not a good idea to apply compression to every single individual drum sound (especially when I don't know what i'm doing with the settings!).

Instead i turned off all the compressors and sent all the drums to one audio channel. Then I applied compression & limiting based on some guide settings I found. Seems to sound much louder, fatter and the kick is coming through better.

As for the boring start...still need to work on that.
