Where to Go in Chicago in May?

Post by Night Spirit » Fri Apr 04, 2008 12:13 am

So, Im going to be spending some time in Chicago and want to make sure I check out the music scene there being the birthplace of House music and all. Any recommendations on clubs/music stores/record shops etc? Not sure what days I'll be there yet so just looking for some general info right now. Thanks!

What type of music you into. I assume house from your post but there's some really deep house clubs or more "pop" type clubs.

As far as record stores, check out gramaphones records on clark. They have a real good selection of vinyl. They are also really nice people there, just let them know your from out of town and what your into and they'll start puilling out all type of vinyl for you.

My bad. Should have been more specific. Right now I'm listening to a lot of House (disco, minimal, deep and otherwise), New Rave, IDM, and Electro. Also wouldnt mind taking in a nice show at a Jazz club.

for jazz go to the Green Mill in Uptown...one of the best spots and has a rich history

for house and other electronic dance music, smart bar (right next to the metro) is a good spot

lots of cool spots in Wicker Park

i also hear Sonotheque is a good spot for music but haven't been there myself

Gramophone is a cool record store...Reckless Records is cool too

I second the Green Mill. Def a great place to listen to jazz. It's tiny though but from my understanding it was one of the first jazz clubs in chicago.

As you get closer to the dates let us know.

Miles Meada will be at smart bar.. plus they updated their sound system about a year ago and it sounds great now.

Paul Van Dyk will be at vision in may too

Thanks for the recommendations! Cant wait. Sucks I cant see my girlfriend but once a month in random locations (she is a Japanese flight attendant and I live in the states) but at least I can get to know Chicago and hopefully take in a sick show or two.

Smartbar for house music, definitely.

Also, see if they are doing any of the stuff in Millenium Park by then. They were throwing nice outdoor parties once a week for awhile, not sure if it's happening this year or not.
