The R3 does not send its audio-data/sound through USB, only Midi (as in, you can use the USB connection as a Midi connection instead of having to connect the Midi ports of the R3 to Midi ports on the computer).

To make sound go from the R3 through Live do the following (have a look at the pictures provided by the other friendly dudes, read the RTFM on how to do things and be a bit more friendly here to people who try to help you :? ):

- connect the audio-outputs of the R3 to the audio-inputs of your computer
- in Live's preferences chose the corresponding inputs and ouputs of your audio-interface to be used by Live
- set the Input of an Audio track in Live to the corresponding inputs of your audio-interface
- set the Audio track either to RECORD-ARM with Monitor AUTO or just set it to Monitor IN
- hit keys of your R3 and listen to how the sound goes from the outputs of your R3 through Live out of your computers audio-interface (if you notice latency, try to lower the audio-buffers via Preferences)

To make the R3 being Midi controlled by Live while its sound go through Live:

- connect the R3 via USB to your computer
- connect the R3's audio-output to your computer audio-input
- in order to make Live control/play the R3 via Midi chose the R3 USB Midi port as "OUTPUT" in Live's Midi Preferences and make sure that the R3 is setup to receive external Midi notes and react to it accordingly (!!!) (if you don't know how to do that RTFM)
- in order to record you playing via the R3's keyboard chose the R3 USB Midi port as "INPUT" in Live's Midi Preferences (you can set both)
- setup a Midi track and insert the "External Instrument" to it
- setup the "External Instrument" to use your USB Midi Output as output and your audio-interface's input as input
- record or mouse-click some Midi clip in Live (! see below!)
- play the Midi clip and make sure your R3 receives all notes, in order to hear the sound make sure the Monitor setting of the track is setup right

!If you want to hear the sound of the R3 while recording a Midi clip via it's keyboard you either have to setup the R3 to use "Local ON" (or whatever it is called in it's preferences) or Live to route the Midi input straight back to the Midi output. Do not setup both at the same time, because that will lead to two notes being played everytime you hit a key (both from local control and Midi control).

Now turn off that computer and open the book.

PS: Instead of using the "External Instrument" you can use two separate tracks, one Midi and one Audio track.

This is the culprit here. You need to find out why there is a "!". Check the preferences tab again and look where there are "!", they tell you which setting is wrong/missing.

Like in my case the Input or Output channels are not setup.

Do you get any sound out of Live at all (try to play some Simpler sounds) or is it just the input that's missing? Click on "Input Configuration" and "Output Configuration" and check if these are selected.

timur bro...i dont even get the option of choosing I/O config. well it gives me 2 L/R stereo and mono...lawdy fuckin DAW!

listen yall i just bought a maudio fast track interface....i was told for certain this will work........L/R outs from the R3 to the Fast track(1/4 inch y-adapt.) My speakers are 1/4 inch to the back of my imac(mini jack, also y adapt) Start up live......no sound, but levels. This is because i switched imacs preferences output to fast track?

My "green" levels in live are reading only out of the right side(stereo) WTF?

i can only use headphones now to moniter? So i take my speaker hook up, and place it in the fast track headphone jack(seeming i use the imac "in"....figured id try it.....the moment i did that my speakers emitted a nasty buzz....like reverb feedback...well a distorted humm....oh it played but fuck that shit...i didnt pay for that sound.....i even tried using rca's from the speakers to the rca's of the fast track...even shittier......WTF......i bought the best of everything and im right the fuck out of er.

Was the purchase of this fast track worth it?......i wanted something just to provide me sound of my R3, theres gotta be a way to sort this out.......im sorry if not as smart as richie hawtin......but this digital shit is driving me retarded. HELP ME.....i havent played music since i bought this shit last week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry then lad, I'm a PC user and thus cannot help you with setting up your mac/core-audio stuff right. I'd suggest getting someone to your house or going to a shop where they can help you setting this up properly.

...and the Hesh has cleared the tower... :D :D :D

On Mac, there's hardly anything needed to optimize for audio. If it's all working sweetly, there's probably no real need to tweak anything in OSX, unless you start having issues.

Have a look at Live's built-in lessons (Help > Lessons Table of Contents > Hardware Setup) for tips on optimizing Live's audio settings for your hardware.
