Updating the library

Post by grav » Sun Apr 06, 2008 11:08 am

I've just downloaded the update to Live 7.0.3.

When launching 7.0.3 it makes a lot of disk activity, and I guess it is currently making a copy of my 7.0.2 library.

However, this Library is about 4.5 GB large and most of it is sample data (since I've got alot of essential instruments and session drums installed) and a lot of small patch files (from the softsynths).

So my questions are:

1.Why does it have to make a copy of the complete library? Couldn't you make another structure of the library that seperated the files that made sense to update from the files that didn't?

2. Can I avoid this library updating process by simply renaming the library folder to 7.0.3 instead of 7.0.2 or would this cause problems? In my case it's a question of even having enough disk space for the two copies of the library.

Thanks for any help :-)

Ok, according to the overview after the update I see that a lot of the session drums etc. was also updated, so that answers question 1.

I'm still interested in knowing whether it is possible to avoid having two copies of the library at any time with regards to low disk space. Can the update process be run on the old library in some way?

This is not correct behavior - Live 7.0.3 updates the library in place.

Hmm, ok, then I've maybe messed around a bit too much with the library paths.

What is the default path to the library?

Did you install any of the beta versions of 7.0.3?

I read in another thread in this forum that the beta versions do make separate copies of some things and that there can be problems when upgrading to the final release.

Have a look through the threads from the last couple of weeks or so and you should find it.

Hi Grav,

Live 7.0.3 just updates your Library, it does not make a copy.
If you have 2 Library folders on your hard disk, then you had indeed manually changed the library location before.
If all your instruments and presets are working fine, then I would suggest to delete the spare library folder and keep the one that is currently selected in your file/folder prefs under "Library location".

FYI:

The Library folder can be anywhere on your harddrive. Unless you set another location manually, it will be installed into these default paths:

XP: C:/Documents and Settings/your user name/My Documents/Ableton/Library
Vista: C./users/username/documents/ableton/
Mac: user homefolder/library/application support/ableton/library

Thanks for the info! One more question - I have an old Powerbook which I also use Live on. Can I manually copy the updated 7.0.3 library from the other Mac to the Powerbook and then install and launch Live 7.0.3? And can I in general keep the two libraries synched with eg. Unison or some other tool or would that cause problems?

Hi,

copying the Library folder to your PB should not be a problem. But I would rather not use a sync tool - I´ve only little experience with sync tools, but I could imagine various problems evolving from that in this case.
