DOES ANYONE USE A MIDI FOOT CONTROLLER WITH LIVE 4?

I NEED SOME HELP WITH THE YAMAHA MFC10 AS I 'M NOT VERY CONFIDENT WITH MIDI.HOW DO I SET UP THE MFC10 TO LAUNCH SCENES AND CLIPS WITH MY FEET IN LIVE4? COULD YOU KINDLY TELL ME STEP BY STEP WHAT I HAVE TO DO.THANKS IN ADVANCE.I WILL APPRICIATE A LOT.

Hello, I use the Roland PK5 midi pedalboard to trigger scenes and clips in Live, and it works flawlessly. I don't know anything about your controller, but as long as you go to your LIVE midi preferences and choose your controller (or the midi port you are plugged into) as one of your midi remote control inputs, it should work fine. At that point you just assign the clips/scenes/etc you want to control using the Midi map mode switch just as you would with any controller. Hope this helps.

I don't know your device, but you need to make sure that your device is sending midi 'note' messages. Most midi foot pedals send midi 'program change' messages as a default. Some controllers can be programmed to send midi note messages, check your manual or look it upon the net. If you can't program your device to send note messages all is not lost. There is software available to change program change messages to midi note messages. Search the forum and the net, I can't remember where I saw it.
Anyway, first step, see ifyou can set your device to send midi note messages.

I just set up a Behringer FCB1010, and I used MIDI controller messages exclusively. I ran into trouble using notes. Once a note is assigned to a control, it is no longer a note. That means when you try to play the note on a synth, it will instead trigger the assigned parameter.

It occurs to me that I have my MIDI tracks set to receive input from "all". So technically I could solve this problem by ensuring that each track is set to receive input from the desired controller (i.e. Simpler is set to receive from Oxygen 8, Impulse gets its input from MPD16, etc.). Since the FCB1010 is set as a remote control in preferences, the notes it sends will not conflict with the instruments (Simpler won't play a note when I use the 1010 to trigger a clip), and vice versa (I won't inadvertently trigger a clip when I play a note on the keyboard). Am I right? I just realized this right now, but I am at work. I'll try this when I get home, but it sounds right to me.

One question:
Does each designated remote controller have full range of MIDI messages? In other words, can I assign controller 87 to one thing on the 1010, and another on the uc33, and they won't conflict, similar to how you would expect it to work with MIDI channels?

It is the perfect size, etc

but it only sends program change and controller number messages

not notes

If you have a link to a PC program that can change program changes to Note on/off messages please share this, as I am near to selling this unit!

Do I have to use the MIDI Yoke program in conjuction with BOMES MIDI translator?

I'm about to dive in, but is this a program I have to start up before Live everytime?

I ended up ditching my laptop and using only my Line 6 Echo Pro at my gig last night. I had been using Live/Firepod for quite a while and it was scary how the hardware looper sounded so much better, and so stable and simple. Live is so awesome for the composing aspect, but I'm starting to wonder if it will ever be a practical touring rig.

no followup on this thread, but I'm curious as well. Everything I use can be cued remote with patch changes from the rocktron midi mate. But Live doesn't do it. I must me missing something.

do you mean the midi mate doesn't send midi messages to ableton, or that it doesn't send ones you can use? if it's the latter, you can use the bome midi translator listed above to translate program change data into note data. it's worth remembering that it'll also change midi data into keystrokes, which is sometimes pretty useful.

Midi mate only sends program changes. Everything I've ever used with midi can accept a program change......evidently Live does not.

I'm a mac user. I looked into control aid and I don't know what window or value to use to say an incoming message is a midi program change. The only window that looks like you can create a lot of translations is the one-to-many window. However theres nothing in there that indicates how to input a midi program change -- just a 'start' column and a nt/cc column.....no clue what to input and what to put in there as an ouput. I'll keep reading but its not apparent up front. Same thing with midi stroke.....why not just accept a program change and be done? I can cue songs in digital performer with program changes.....

EDIT: I searched and found enough info on a program called midipipe to make it work...now cueing all songs at random with a midi footswitch. Cool

Me too. Thanks for the info. I had a Midi Mate sitting around and wanted to trigger clips in Ableton, but to no avail. The Midi Mate only does Program Changes and CC's in bank mode. You can, however, use controller mode and program buttons 5-9 to trigger On's. However, on the advice of this forum I checked out midipipe, and it works great! Now I can use Bank mode, and midipipe translates the program changes to Midi notes. Very cool...
