Hello all,
I'm still flopping around in Live 7.03, trying to learn up from down. Lately I've been unable to record MIDI clips in Session View. I believe I am following all of the necessary steps:
1) I double click on the clip to which I want to record;
2) I arm the global recording button;
3) I trigger the clip to commence recording.
And I get...nothing. I hear no metronome, and my MIDI notes are not triggering my synth (or at least the audio is not coming through). I see the MIDI-on indicator bar lighting up when I hit a note, but there's no sound.
I can record fine in Arrange View, so I know it's not that my system's MIDI is screwed up overall. Plus, I can play synths in Session View, as long as I am not trying to record a clip, meaning I can either play when the track is armed to record but recording is not active or when I am recording into the Arrange channel fron Session View, not recording to a discrete clip.
Can anyone help me out with this one? Thanks in advance,
-JL
Live 7.03 - Can't record MIDI clips in Session View
Hello Jedilaw,
First, make sure that you actually can hear a sound when playing a MIDI track
(make sure that the MIDI Preferences and routing is correct and that the MIDI track is holds a virtual instrument or sends MIDI notes to an external device).
In the Session view, you do no need to click the global record button to record a MIDI sequence, although you can record MIDI sequences from the Session into the Arrangement this way...). Please see your Live 7 .pdf manual CHAPTER 14. RECORDING NEW CLIPS p.193 for a detailed explanation of recording MIDI notes.
best,
Christian Kleine

Thanks very much for the quick response.
I can hear a sound when playing a MIDI track, at least insofar as I can arm a MIDI track to record in Session View and can play notes via the QWERTY keyboard while not recording, with those notes being audible. Everything works in Session View until I start trying to record a clip to a specific channel (as opposed to recording to the arranger). And I can actually record a MIDI track in Arrange View. If my i/o settings were wrong, wouldn't that prevent recording in either view, instead of just affecting Session View?
I took another look at the Live 7 manual. One thing I noticed is that there is a specifi input option for "computer keyboard" on the MIDI channels. Do I have to use that setting instead of the "All ins" setting?
Thanks again,
JL
